NEW 2015 - HIFIMAN HE400S
Feb 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM Post #2,101 of 2,884
400s is noticeable more bassy compared to HD600 ?

It might appear more bassy since it has a warm sound signature. But they should be pretty close. And you can improve the HE 400S' bass buy changing the pads like people have been mentioning in this thread. Disclaimer: I have never heard the HD 600s but I am going off the opinion of the general consensus of other people, reviewers, etc. And their measurements.

Also I think you meant, " OEM Velpads <Focus A <Brainwavz"? Right not "OEM Velpads > Focus A > Brainwavz." Because that would mean the velpads were the best and brainwavz the worst.

Yeah, I wasn't thinking of the > or < as less than or greater than............... just my path from the HifiMan OEM Velpads to Focus Pad A and then to & ending with the  Brainwavz angled pads.

Ohhhh. hahaha that's just how I read it. Maybe i've been working with too many inequalities in mathematics, lol. Is that how you would rank them anyways?

Quick Question to Focus A pad owners:

How do you store the 400S with Focus A pads

1. Do you lie them down and let the pads touch each other and mush a bit like when on your head?

2. Or do you turn the cups flat and let the sides of the cups touch and either let pads sit on surface or

3. Reverse and let the pads point up and have the backs of the cups on the surface

4. And of course there are probably going to be the fastidious types who have some elaborate hanger - stand and a cool method for storing.

Let me know, cuz right now I have them in the squish mode when I am not listening to them which is 22 hours of the day.

cheers

I know there are a lot of posts in this thread, but if you do a search on the thread up top............................ I think I remember a few folks who have bought aftermarket cables and posted impressions.

Excuse me, please. I am confused. Do you mean these:

And could you explain, please, how you connected the pads to HE400s?

If you use the search function up top to search the thread, you will see a number of posts describing how to attach either of them.

I have the angled pair ($24.50). You need a pair of rings taken from either your OEM pads (they are now destroyed) or buy a cheap ($10-15) 'donor' pair of HifiMan pads for the rings. If you are patient, you can email HifiMan and buy the rings. I paid $6 shipped BUT they took weeks to arrive. There are plenty of posts here and even YouTube videos on how to attach them to the 400S.

I bought a pair of these cables on ebay.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/161743404378?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=460719869868&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT  I got the 3 meter ones because I needed the length for my set up.  I also didn't want to spend $100 plus shipping for the HiFiman ones.  The sound was horrible when I first hooked them up.  After i burned them in for a few days without listening to them the sound was much better.  I do think they are a little rolled off on the top end compared to the HiFiman ones.  But honestly they sound pretty good.  I also have done the grill mod and have the focus pads.  So all three mods cost me less than $100, so for $400 for everything.  In the end I am more than happy with the sound of this set up.

Don't buy the Brainwavz pads from Amazon. I did that and had to return them. The ones I got were waaaaay too small to fit.
You need to get the HM5 pads. I would go direct to Brainwavz.

I got these from Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZY8PGJI and they fit just fine, just had to stretch out the leather rim a bit. I didn't think it would fit either at first, but someone else here who'd gotten them as well advised me.

Thank you guys for your replies.
I wonder, are there any reasons to think that the pads from Brainwavz directly would be different than pads from Amazon? Does anybody have such experience? Both sites have the same picture with a draft, where the measurements are identical.

I'm sure they're exactly the same, there's even a pleather and velour version on both sites. The only reason to choose one over the other is pricing and delivery, especially if you happen to have Amazon Prime.
