Hi everybody.
I like to replace my SR80i (served me well) & take a leap in the headphones class.
My budget is mentioned in the tile. My music taste is mainly rock (all forms of it), a little electric music & jazz.
I'd go for an advanced Grados but I found them uncomfortable.

Audio Technica A900. It's where I'd go if I someday changed my mind about Grados. By the way, I'm on my 7th hour wearing mine lol. Gonna sleep with them on in a bit haha.
 
Wish you'd stick to Grados though, they get good when you move up!

Thanks Chris but I prefer open cans. I wish I could stay with Grado as well, but I want an over-ear headphones for comfort.

Whoops sorry, I confuse AD900 and A900. You'll want to look at the AD900. Pound for pound they rock!

If you are moving to highend headphones then AMPs is needed to drive them due to high impedance but i will recommend these cans like HFI2400/2500, AD900, SR325i, HD600, HD650, DT990, DT880 and Sony SA5000.

Can you find something better than the HD598 for $160?

Except the Grado, which pair are more suitable for the music type I mentioned above?

The AD900's sound good with rock and jazz. Mids are more pronounced.

Do u find them comfortable after a long use?
Isn't it worth pushing the budget to 300$ (the ad900 cost less then what I'm willing to spend)? and go for something like Sennheiser or Beyer?
 
BTW, forgot to mention that the new cans will be working with Little Dot II for start. The amp will be replaced later on with a higher class amp (probably a other tube amp).

Yes they are, i currently own the closed version but the open back design are comfy...auditioned them few times. 
 
How important is bass for you? in this case, try something by beyer...as the bass on the AD900's is not prominent.

DT880's and HD600's.
 
Don't bother with the AudioTechnica 700-anything's. They're comfortable, but they're not as high quality and cannot accomplish the ranges that the above can. There's a reason they're only $100.

If you have an amp that is really strong and don't mind burn in time, the AGK 701/2's are right around that price and open back.  They are not bass machines but they have plenty for the music you provided.  Again though they do take power to really let them breath.

The Sennheiser HD600's are on sale on amazon right now for a tad over $300. You can always invest in a small desktop amp l8ter on (like the Fiio E9). At a bit over $300 that is a steal of a deal on headphones that range close to $500 usually. Also the HD650 are on sale for $388. Good luck.

What about audio technica ATH-AD1000 or the beyer dt880? do they fit to rock music?
