Amperex 8416's were nice.  I've also liked the 6H30i's.  Just about any headphone is good with the clear top RCA 6SN7s.  I've just started breaking in a pair for Brimar CV4034's that are sounding very promising.  What about you?

Is it known to be particularly hot (as in "treble happy")? I don't see how the Mad Dogs can sound shrill

"Sometimes" they sound shrill, confirming some of the earlier impressions.  I didn't find them dark either, rather clean and airy.  On some recordings yes, the closed sound is apparent but it's been absolutely superb.  Wish I could live with that one negative.

I agree with Prep. The MD is very true to the recording. They will reproduce music very faithfully to the track. If the recording is on the "hot" side then that's what you'll get. If the bass hits hard, you'll get that also.
