MrSpeakers Alpha PRIME: Impressions and Discussion Thread

Just wondering if anyone had the chance to hear the oppo's pm3 and compare them with the prime, they cost a fraction (apparently 399$) and I was also wondering if the alphas are still competitive.

I did heard the oppo pm-3 at the RMAF while I did not compare it directly with the prime I did with the oppo pm-1. The pm-3 does not have that full sound or the bass extension that you would get out of the pm1. The pm-3 is one of the lightest planar headphone I seen and more designed for music on the go. The pm-3 is facing some stiff competition at that price range.   The pm-3 is not in general release at this time and might be subject to some final changes.

continuing from my previous post
I was listening to a DSD album of Fernando Sor: four sonatas for classical guitar performed by Ricardo Gallen.
When I tried my Stax headphone on this piece I am hearing more of a plastic sound quality possibly hearing the resonance  more from the nylon part of the string. It does gets tiring after a while. The Prime has good transit response with more relaxed easy sound as a whole. Therefor the Prime is less tiring than my Stax in the long run.  When I use my near field monitors I noticed how common some of the traits of good monitors are to the Prime.  That helps me when I compose music using DAW(Digital Audio Workstation) type of software on my computer making translation in mixing a bit easier.  I do not have a big collection of recorded guitar music but listen to guitar more in concerts.

Just ordered the "Alpha PRIME" :)  Anyone know what's the shipping schedule like?

I'm estimating 3 weeks for orders placed now.  We're starting to scale our output.

Awesome!  I also have a question.  I currently have the Schiit Magni and Modi setup, would that be okay for the Alpha Prime?  Wasn't sure if I need to upgrade to something else.  What do you guys recommend for the Alpha Prime?

I have been listening to T. Albinoni oboe concerto on the Naxos label. The separation of the oboe from the orchestra is fantastic and you are right up in front of the oboe it seems. You can really sense the feeling that the player puts in with the oboe. None of my other headphones have that  kind of instrument tie-in with the player playing quality. Only my Emotiva Airmotiv 6 with its large folded ribbon tweeter being feed by its own dedicated 100 watts RMS amplifier comes close to the Prime in instrument separation.  I am so impressed that I brought vol. 2 and vol.3 of the oboe concertos. I rather pay for good music than getting a new amp at this point. My IFI iDSD micro continues to work well with my Prime.
