In the $300 range, definitely the NAD HP50.  Tonally similar to the Alpha Dogs and a more prominent low end, just lacking in resolution and detail retrieval by comparison.

+1 Maybe it's a stupid question but i have an akg k545. Do you think guys that the Mad dog should be an upgrade ? Thanx !

Latest review of the Alpha dog: http://noblehifi.blogspot.com/2014/01/alpha-dog-review.html

Alpha Dogs produce a nearly neutral, surprisingly spacious and extremely detailed sound that can greatly impress. The bass is impressive and punchy for a neutral headphone, which is impressive enough, but it can also be tweaked if you're that way inclined.

We've all spent much time comparing the AD's to headphones at the top of the heap, which speaks well of the ADs. I am really interested in comparisons down hill a ways. Say closed cans $600 down to $250 or so. I will go for the AD's, but since I like to keep my stuff in great condition, I'm also looking for a good pair of traveling and office cans down in the $250-ish range. I know I like the ADs, MDs. I also know I don't want on ears. If any of you out there have some comparisons and comments, please share, but please stay on topic with reference to the ADs. Note - pretty familiar wit the HD25-1-ii and the Beyer 1350's. Kinda done with those two.

(Sorry, previous mistake, it is that quote that i would like to quote previously)

I stopped reading after:

As much as I liked the Mad Dog, they look and feel like a modified headphone. The Alpha dog, on the other hand, does not,

Of course, this is the exact opposite of reality.  Here are the unmodified ones (actually T40RP) in the studio:

The only difference in the Mad Dogs is the decals.   The Alpha Dogs, on the other hand, have custom cups and custom red automotive paint job and seem "less modded" ??

I think he was insinuating that the Alpha Dog feels like its own official branded independent glorious identity, and not JUST a "modded" DIY project, which is what the Mad Dogs feel like.

Woohoo!! Just got my Alphas today!  I ordered on Dec 2 for those still waiting.

Only a few songs in but I am very impressed so far. My little ifi iCAN seems to be doing very nicely with them. Volume knob around 10 o'clock on the middle gain setting. I don't think this amp is going break much of a sweat with these cans (at least at my listening levels.)

I took that to mean that the author found the Alpha Dogs to seem more like they're manufactured by Mr. Speakers, instead of being a mod.  That they have the appearance of being OEM, apart from the "Fostex" band.

FYI we're moving to a bigger facility on Feb 1.  This will likely slow our shipping next week.

Does this mean after a slow down there is a potential speed up? ie more headphones can be done at time.

Yup.  We're moving more and more of the process in house, the new facility supports that and gives us more room to work.

Just wondering will the move be affecting the first batch of upgrades you have received? To my calculations that move is around the 2 week period of 1st batch upgrades. Not to rush or anything, or to sound anxious. Just would like to keep a tab on things.
