Are these really that bad that they only sound good thru mods? I like the HiFiMan he400s and was hoping the 1060 would be a good replacement perhaps with better bass impact. I'm not too handy when it comes to modding equipment... i don't even like to EQ lol

Yeah, I don't think the stock M1060's are bad at all, I found them quite good actually. I just think with a little modding (some of which is really easy), they can become pretty spectacular.

I love the way mine sound stock. I have no plans on modding mine, but it is cool that there are the resources to mod if one wants too.

Ordered the headphones and some 3D printed covers and they both arrived today! I had some thin foam inserts that came with a pair of headphone pads and they were the perfect diameter to replace that thick foam.

Any recommendations for a longer cable that terminates in a 1/4"?

I posted THIS a few pages ago. I bought it HERE, and you can get the cable 5ft, 7ft, or 10ft. I'm loving the cable, super nice build. Congrats on the headphones btw.

How do these compare to HD650's? Just got a my 4xx and I'm thinking I won't keep these very long.

I was in San Francisco last weekend and they had a Sennheiser pop up store next to our hotel. I was able to AB the HD650's and my M1060's which I brought with me. I like my M1060's better. Might be heresy, but I found the HD650's a bit dull. I would like to get a pair for a longer sessions, just to be sure if my opinion would stand.

As someone with a M1060C and a HD 6XX, the HD 6XX is a lot more dull and laid back for sure.

Yeah, I too prefer my (1st Gen) M1060 to my HD6XX. However, I still firmly believe HD6XX is a steal at its' $200 price.

HD600 and HD6XX, even though I very rarely use them anymore, are permanent fixtures in my collection as "known" reference points against which I compare other HPs.

I'll be odd and favor the HD6XX over the M1060 with no hesitation...at least with my system the HD6XX is fairly close in feel to my TH-X00PH except for the low end presence. Sound is fairly rich and dynamic with good bass on a high powered warm leaning rig - i.e. Schiit EITR, Gustard X20U DAC, and modded Gustard H10 with Burson V6 opamps (Vivid singles and Classic duals). No EQ needed, bass is great. The demo of the HD6XX is the reason I instantly got on the HD58X drop right when it began last December, really want a '6' series Sennheiser in my collection.

I've never fallen in love with the M1060...magnetic planars are my least favorite type of headphone from all I've heard (except the T40RP MK3 on my rig....which is why it's being converted to an Argon MK3), and the M1060 is slightly boring and a little too lacking for me to really want to listen to music with it. I have the M1060 because I want an example of each type of headphone in my collection, and I decided on it to be my Magnetic planar rep (because sounds very similar to LCD-2 [also slightly boring] for much less)... like it more for tinkering around with than actually listening to music with. It's a great pick for gaming and movies though, which the majority of its time has been. Dynamic biodyna driver based headphones and STAX Lambdas are my absolute favorite headphones.

No. They aren't "that bad". Everyone hears differently and has different taste. You mod to taste, as you do with EQ'ing. I'm unsure as to why EQ'ing seems to be so offside with so many. A few db here and there can make very good headphones even better.

I own all three as well ... I find the Senns quite a bit better at resolving high end. Tambourine in one tune is hardly perceivable on the 1060's and 'right there' on the 6xx. I find the same with the 1060's trying to resolve horn sections. More clarity with the 6xx cans. Just my own experience.

You have to remember that this is head-fi...kind of at the extreme end of things where this is more of a top level hobby in the lives of a lot of people; hence the modding and extra steps. The m1060 sounds great as it is for the price. Just grab a used pair from the forums or ebay and save even more...get them for $180ish and it's a steal.

Not gonna lie...X2s beat it IMHO, SHP9500s are every bit as enjoyable, I can construct an argument that the little m560s are better in some ways, etc; point is that there is no "omg, these are God's voice encased in a can" headphones. m1060s are very nice, very cheap vs competition open back planars for those looking to try such a thing and add to their options. Love both the m560 and m1060s.
