you can use an amp with uber wattage to an he6 or a k1000, but it will just sound "normal" unless you get high current running through the amp as well. the 6w (or was it 8w) lyr cant drive a k1000/he6 at all, based on my experience. it can play it at decent volume but with volume knob at 4-5 o'clock
 
also, most 15w 30w power amp can make the two headphone to loud volume, but it doesnt sound spectacular to me, compared to diy amps with big current with decent wattage.
 
there are a few exceptions though, and this will go on so ill just end it here

These sound so ordinary and insipid to me, at the moment, that I could easily believe they were "entry level".
 
Is it normal for them to leak a lot of sound ? I thought a closed-back headphone would allow for private listening. This set definitely DON'T. They are LOUD.

That's what I'm inclined to believe. The Z1000s sound excellent. IEMs tend to be far more intimate and "in your face" so this might be exactly what he likes...

Well as I said before I have enquired about the 1R earpads so that I could use those on my Z1000s as they both share the same form factor. Turns out to be way too expensive. Here's the email:

ohhhhhhhhhhh schiet. Those're some expensive arsed ear pads :3 well, seeing that the reason why Sony switched to LCD from bio-cell, might be worth it later down the road? Oh btw, I thought that the pads were completely different. The 1R pads have connectors at the back, while the Z1000 pads were slipped around like the V6 pads.

the pads wont fit, i tried it. it is abit "wiggly" and it will make the 1R pad's "lips" loose by just inserting it. good thing my 1R has problems so after i tried swapping the pads to the z1000, i returned it for RMA lol

Has anyone tried using a replacement cable from another headphone with an iPod remote on it with these, as they just use a 3.5mm jack?

Failing that, does anyone know where to get a replacement 1.2m cable? I have 7520s (doesn’t seem to be much discussion of them) and would like to start using the for portable use too.

^ I just tried the UE VI 4000, 6000, 9000 cable I have lying around here. It works but the cable doesn't feel secure and looks crappy. Upon further comparison I noticed that the sound is a little warmer/muffled with the UE cable...
 
Might be the mic/controls, contact issues or actually a design choice. Maybe also the Sony cable is better quality.

Thanks for testing. It’s as I had feared then—I have not tried any other cables with my headphones yet, and it seems like they probably require the locking mechanism to be secure.

Cables don’t make a difference to how headphones sound, but the remote & mic do add impedance which can change the frequency response somewhat.

Looks like I will just have to try and source a short Z1000 cable for my 7520 then.

cable for the 7520 and z1000 are inter-changable since they use the same locking mechanism and plug/screw

Yeah, but they don't have an iPod remote, which is what I was hoping for. It seems like the jack is designed only for locking cables, rather than being fine with any 3.5mm cable. Too bad Sony didn't stick with the same locking mechanism for the MDR-1R. (looks like it's just held in with pressure?)
