Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Review & Measurements

You don't agree with Solderdudes findings from DIY Audioheaven that the foam has no effect on the sound?

I haven't experimented but I plan on doing the felt mod and doing some listening with and without the foam. I already experiment with some plastic material over the grills and some extra rewble energy was very noticeable. I'm thinking its something similar to the effect the steel mesh has on the HD660S.

A combo of the felt mod on the magnet and either a steel mesh over the felt OR a steel fabric somewhere between the size of the stock foam down to something closer to the size of the driver.
I haven't measured anything so I may just be getting used to the headphones or indeed be placebo I guess. To me the difference is there, but it isn't the difference between Grado and Sennheiser. It is a slight shift, it feels more open to me. But more doesn't mean a ton, just not the same. I look forward to reading your findings on the mods too.

My ears are probably more tuned to where bass guitar, synth and drums sit in the mix, how they kick and attack. I played in bands for over 20 years. With ear protection throughout I add. Hehe.

Placebo might be strong in this case since it's impossible to swap quickly. Eyes see that you removed something and brain thinks that it must make a difference. Tricky thing!

My headphones finally left Germany and the next stop is Finland. There's a chance that I get them this week.

Sure is. Fingers crossed that they land with you soon. I was lucky. They hit customs in the UK the weekend before last. Once I paid they were released and with me a few days later.

When you get them, I would be interested to hear how they sit vs your K712. They are the next thing I am considering.

Will make comparison for sure. I can tell you one thing already though: I don't like my AKG K712 Pro much. I prefer my HD 595 (even MX 760). Also comfort wise it could be better.

Ah... Gotcha. I would still like to try them I think. I had the K7XX and really liked them but something was missing. From all the reading I have done the 712 seem like a more refined 7XX.

If you ever feel like trying the 565 Ovations (I have two pairs) we could do a trade.

Hmmm, starting to have second-thoughts on my 6XX purchase after looking at some of the reviews. I'm always down for a little more bass so these might have been the ones for me. Very interested to see how these respond to tubes.

Used to own 1A while I must say they were comfortable to wear, soundstage was not very wide pretty average... bass was fatiguing it's like it was flooding other frequencies. It was welcome in some songs, and especially movies, but they quickly became headphones I couldn't listen to for more than an hour and for that reason alone I got rid of them. Never tested on different pads though ... Do you prefer 1A over 58x?
I can't put one over the other, as the reason why I have those as an alternative to the HD58X is their strong differences. You can't ask for a more different headphone. It gives me more variety - to test mixes on (since I still prefer to mix and master with studio monitors with a custom sub or towers in an acoustically good room). If I want more isolation, a touch more treble and more mid and sub bass then I'll reach for the Sony. If I want more mid focus, but still decent treble extension and surprisingly good bass (just not as much) with less reflected sound (being open), I'd reach for the Sennheisers instead. You could consider the Sony MDR-1A with Meze pads for a bigger soundstage and slightly cleaner low mids (but a little more low sub bass, that does not bleed up) or with the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7 pads. Meze 99 pads are $20 at their website or MSR7 pads are under $20 on Amazon or eBay. The MSR7 pads will give you more treble, even clearer low mids and mid bass with a good sub bass, just not nearly as much as the Meze 99 pads bring. I'm also burning the HD58X in for a long time; bass boosted pink noise with a bit of treble roll off for a slightly more energetic brown noise sound for many hours, and many hours of a very extensive iTunes collection. Each time I listen I hear the improvement, these seem to respond well to burn-in more than most other cans I have heard.

Great taste there man. I was thinking of getting myself a pair of DT990 before I got into this drop, maybe it could provide an alternate presentation to my beloved Grado - which always remain my main drivers for Rock/Metal

Excited to receive these in a few days. I had the 6XX but I wasn't really a big fan of them. I've liked most of Sennheiser's products though and enjoy my HD 4.40BT throughly.

From what I've hear, and if you guys could confirm, these have less recessed treble, better subbass but less detail. There seems to be a bit of modding going on already which is a huge plus for me. I've not heard much about soundstage however. How do they compare the the HD6XX's?

I have yet to purchase my first Grado's other than phono cartridges I just can not from the abundance of reviews narrow down the model I should get .

I came close to a used set of GS-1000s or maybe I will start off with something cheaper and mod them to my taste .

I will buy a set of Grado's this year though
