markl Mod for Denon AH-D5000 (With Pics!)

Just one note for those who are attempting the mod. I would suggest not putting tape on the pleather but on the white plastic ring. When I tried to remove some of the tape the pleather started pealing off a bit. Also, by taping it to the plastic ring it enables you to still be able to adjust the pad later to your liking. Also, stuffing the pad with tons of cotton stretches the pleather a lot so if you decide you don't like the mod the pads will be a little looser than before.

I've only done the pad mod so far since I didn't have any sponge/dampening material around. Anyways, I'm liking what I am hearing. I've always felt that the denons needed a little more depth in the soundstage and this pad mod really seems to do this trick. Nice job Markl. I'm not sure whether the sponge will help my plastic d2000 cups but I plan on doing it anyways.

FYI, you can purchase the memory foam pillow for $10-$20 bucks and try the mod. It may be a while before the foam sample actually arrives.

PJ...how about some pics of the Beyer headband mod to complement Mark's mod?

Mark, have you gotten a chance to try the DX1000 earpads on the D5000?

I believe Skylab has both the DX1000 and D5000...I wonder if he tried interchanging the pads?

Tried the mod, worked great! I did not use the tape however as it seemed unnecessary - the cup rim holds the cotton in fine.

The effects of the mod?

Tighter bass - I can hear ALOT more texture in Geddy Lee's bass guitar on their 'Moving Pictures' album. I guess the bass has tightened considerably whilst still maintaining its impact.

Wider and higher soundstage - 'Moving Pictures again, the synthesizers on 'Witch Hunt' move around more and for the first time I can sense changes in the hight of the soundstage!

Sorry for the thread hijack markl, I was just wondering if you have listened to the audio technica ad2000. I would like to know what you think about it vs the d5000 since they are about the same price. I'm about to pull the trigger on the ad2000 and would be happy to hear peoples descriptions on why i should get the denons instead. This would probably be better off in another thread but I was interested to post it here where a bunch of d5000 fans hang out.

Computerstud, where can you get the pillow for that cheap?

I'm inquiring at Audiocubes to see if they can get me some spare pads, Kohn is looking into it. The problem is that the JVC pads are about 1/2" wider in diameter than the Denon's pads. I'm sure there's a way to make it work, though, it shouldn't be too hard.

My wallet is quivering after this thread. I've avoided closed headphones since I mainly view them as a tool for gaming, but getting so close to the R10 for $500 . . . it's just so tempting.

I've wondered though, could certain companies be letting the bass shake the housing on purpose? On a lot of cheaper supra-aural headphones (sony mdr-vxxx line the worst offender) I noticed a lot of people hear them at kiosks and go "Wow, the bass!," and the reason I've always suspected is because it's literally shaking their ears and providing some level of physical feedback. This is especially on headphones like the V150's that have bass on par with some $20 earbuds.

I doubt that was the intention of Denon since these cans are considered (by them) to be reference headphones. They could have put more emphasis on build quality but they are by no means built poorly. The one screw swivel arm design is not the best idea, though. They are not rugged headphones that you can just throw around. But the earcup and driver mount are built very well. And I don't notice the shaking that he is talking about. If Denon put a little dampening material on the earcup it probably wouldn't lessen the bass too much. I put on some bass heavy tracks last night and cupped my hands around the earcups and didn't feel them rattle at all.
