M-Audio Q40 Impressions (long w/pics)

Yeah can't wait until the HDH50s are out and about and impressions start coming in, especially from people who have Q40s. Was seriously considering getting some AlphaPadded Q40s but would kick myself if I got them and then these came out and ended up being an upgrade to the Q40 sound.

I'll be superhappy if the HDH50 is even equally good as Q40 as that would stop me having nightmares of my Q40 breaking in the future and there's nowhere I can buy a new one.

I would be even happier if the Alpha Pads fit on the HDH50.

170€ from thomann. they have store all over europe on the web/

Various UK retailers sell them for £119. Gear4music with free shipping available + £7 for extended 60-day return and 5 year warranty . So ~157€ with that 60-day money back garantuee and 5 year warranty. Sounds cool to me.

It's a shame I bought the Q40 already. I can't justify buying the HDH50 until they break. In addition, I recently bought the Portaphile 627 Micro which makes them even more adverse to my spending habits.

Only thing I've found with the Shure pads is it kind of feels like they press on my ears after an hour or two. It doesn't hurt as in pain but more of a slight discomfort. I dunno if it's just because I haven't used the Q40s with the Shure pads much with me being out of the house or if it's my massive ears haha!

Just a note for everyone - there are still new Q40's on ebay for around $100 USD.

Does anyone know of any deals on alpha pads?

There really are no "deals" on Alpha pads as the only supplier is Mr Speakers.  You can find a used pair once in a blue moon but the stock price of $59 is the norm.

Hm, are they really that great? I think I'll have to stick with my Beyerdynamic velour pads for now.

Yes, for the Q40 they are really pretty great.  Velours to my ears and a few other guys, kills the bass.  Give it a shot and a less expensive solution for you is the Shure 840 pads for about $15 a pair.  A good compromise.
