After shipping, you may be as well off to buy a new one. He wants 2,032. and you can get a new one for 1850. If you have a good spdif converter, 1725.

I was extremely surprised recently to hear a $120 amp that I think I might like better (with HD 800) than the headphone amp section of the Hilo: the soon-to-be-released (Jason, dude, yer killin' me!) Schiit Vali.

If you get a chance to drop one on top of your Hilo (it's the same size as the Magni), do give it a listen.

I'm planning to order a Vali as soon as Schiit officially puts it on sale, and after I've had some time with it and the Hilo I will post impressions.

How much sonic improvement will Hilo get from external DC Power  and  USB->AES  converter?

...... And how is the USB compared to dedicated USB->AES converter?

Hi, here http://www.head-fi.org/t/552695/lynx-hilo-new-offering-from-pro-audio-company/375#post_9815307 I gave my impressions using internal xmos usb interface Vs Offramp 5.
My conclusion is that they are on par even if with different characters.

A question came up about XLR to RCA adapters being potentially damaging and wanted to see if anybody has used them with the HILO. I'm going to send my unit out for a comparison but the reviewer only has SE amps. I've got TRS to RCA adapters I can send but wanted to offer up the best sound. I see Lynx has XLR-RCA cables on their site and will contact them but wanted to ask the "crew" if they've had any experience with this.

Yeah the price wasn't very good.  Not sure why he's asking for so much.  Can you elaborate on the "good spdif converter, 1725." part?  I live in Hong Kong, so not sure if that's still applicable.

$1850 is for Hilo with USB board installed
The board:   http://www.lynxstudio.com/product_detail.asp?i=58

$1725   for Hilo without this usb board.
So if you already have a great USB->SPDIF converter,  you have the option to save $125.

(But I am not sure how to update to future firmware without USB board...)

Can you compare (or have you compared) USB->Hilo   to  CD Transport->Hilo?    (Using rip of the same CD,   or burn digital file to CD)

Because it's from EU??

How are people still ignorant of the fact that we have 20-25% VAT added to everything compared to outside of EU, you can't just convert to dollars for comparison purposes without removing that. Hilo retail is around 2200€.

I'm sorry, but I am quite ignorant of things that don't happen in my area of the world.  Just like how you are probably ignorant of some things that I take for granted.  Too bad that I've never been to Europe.  Not sure why you took offense to my comment, as it wasn't even a statement but a question.

Still doesn't change the fact that the price is high for non EU buyers.  But good thing is now I know about the high VAT.

Don't take it personally, I just take general offence since it's so common source of posts "why are things so cheap in US? why are things so expensive in the EU?". People compare and seek prices all the time on the forum, it's not something obscure.. maybe one of the most common global economy thing one should now.

For EU buyers that's a great deal, I would buy it if I wasn't looking to downgrade!

Those that have say and Off Ramp or the Alpha from Berkley, Bel Canto Reflink, Audiophilleo, CI Audio Transient II, etc. http://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/HW/USB_SPDIF.htm

yfei brings up a good point about upgrading software without a USB link.
