I took a lot of the suggestions in mind but I ended up just getting the Sony MDR-ZX700.  It seems to be a real candidate for value in the "all rounder" department.  I took all of your suggestions into consideration though.
 
They were about $85.  I know I have the budget for more but I really don't think my untrained ears could justify a worthy difference in the $100 vs $250 range.  Thanks for all the help!  Hopefully I remember to come back with my layman impressions against my Triports before I throw the Triports on eBay and can't propertly AB them.

I  think it's more a matter of finding something that satisfy you;  from times to time, you see some people complaining about not liking a 1k $  can. Some people are more easy to satisfy than other, and if your quench for an "audiophile sound" stop at this can, then it's great.
