LG V30

BRIEFLY tested v30 vs v20 for about hour yesterday.

No huge apparent difference. Maybe v30 little more clearer.

also v30 smaller. Didn't seem to be a huge upgrade.

Definitely in no rush to spend $800. But will do more testing.

Thanks for review.

Anyone can compare v30 against onkyo cmx1? Cmx1 has slight advantage in SE against v20. I wonder how does v30 dare against it.

I just tried the Ultimate Ears Adaptor ( 100 ohm) and it engaged the High Gain mode on the V30. Unfortunately, the volume is way LOWER on my It03. It is weird....

I would like to add that I was just experimenting since the low gain mode provides enough power to these earphones.

That adaptor lowers the output. It is what it is for. If I remember correctly by around 20dB. This is so you don't get blasted with loud announcements on planes etc.

The high gain mode on the V20, and it is likely the same on the V30, raises the output by 12dB. So you are gaining nothing. In fact, due to the 100ohms, you are increasing the nice low output impedance to 100 ohms, and lowering the control of the headphone drivers.

I wish people would stop suggesting these impedance adaptors for getting high impedance mode. You lose more than you gain.

The best way is a 3.5mm splitter with a >50 ohm load on one branch. Plug that in to the phone, then plug teh headphones into the other branch. you can remove the load then. I made a 430 ohm load into one end of the branch, but I can solder etc.

Was the V20 and/or the V30 the B&O stamped one?

I am not sure if B&O do anything with the tuning, (but I wish they wouldn't), but I wondered if it was like with like in this respect. My non-B&O G6 is better and more neutral than my B&O V20 in my opinion.

The v30 of reviews seen had always the B&O logo.
That said, with the mod on the rooted phone I think the sound shouldn't be with the B&O tuning, maybe someone can try the mod on a B&O v20.
BTW with the v30 I think is better to not root it before finding on xda if there's a solution to LG policy to rooted phone:some time ago I ve read that LG slowed the rooted ones over time with some files and erasing that files is not easy.

V30 is will be available to buy in UK on 1St November, but there is no news about the 128 GB version, quite sad.
And the price is £799, not worth it in my opinion.

Is there a better phone out there for audio at the moment? Seems like a good phone that competes with other flagship phones in performance. With a great DAC thrown in, plus some alternative digital filters. How much is that worth?

Well the older V20 is better than my Note 8, Galaxy S8, Note FE and ZTE Axon 7, so i suspect the V30 has little competition if you include its support for aptx HD.

It's worth it for me, definitely the best phone I've had and it sounds great. Plus I felt like I had to represent the headphone socket after Google dropped it too.

For anyone interested this was the response from Tidal when I asked about MQA for the LG V30. Nothing particularly useful in the response but I tried!

My opinion is : £600 for V30 and £650 for V30+. There is no other better phone out there. This is only OLED with great audio quality, including video recording and playback, FM Radio amoung the great features. Let's buy it around Christmas time, i guarantee a much better price and 400 GB micro sd will be more affordable.
LG is leading on the OLED Tv and now is taking on Samsung for best screens:)

I have lg v10 too and thinking to update to v30.

Please make comparison between This too in the sound quality.
The v30 does what the v10 does well but 5x more. The v10 has some spatialness its like 2x the v20. The v10 is a way more organic sounding compared to the v20 like 3x. The v20 is colder and less spatialness. The v30 is 5x the v10 in spatialness and 3x more organic. Depending on the filter used on the v30 it can change the amount of spatialness, clarity, and natural organic sound, But not simultaneously.

The coolest part about the v30 is headphone synergy capabilities. For example closed custom monitors can sound way more open due to spatialness dac filter. Open cans can maintain their openness and gain more clarity with the clarity filter. When I use the spatial filter it's hard to desern any difference on open cans. But the difference is very audiable on closed customs. In vise versa with clarity. But clarity filter is still audiable in customs just not as a dramatic effect as the spatialness filter.

Maybe one day. I'm fine with ordering at the initial retail to get use of it straightaway, given my company will meet half the cost as it will be used for work extensively. Been waiting a long while for something like the V30. Expecting mine shortly after November 1st.

Now interested in purchasing some decent IEMs, perhaps some balanced armature items. SE 846s seem a bit 'spendy', but maybe there's a decent alternative that won't break the bank.
