KH-K1000 are much warmer, have MUCH more bass, have better PRAT and a more natural presentation. Very engaging.
Less detailed and a bit hollow sometimes.
D2000 are more detailed, more refined,
but also less engaging. Strident, almost sibilant highs sometimes. Much lighter in overall presentation.

I also promised to compare the Kenwood to the JVC DX1000.
I basically used the same music as I did in the D2000 comparison.
My conclusions are simple:
Bass is equally strong and good on both phones.
The Kenwood soundsignature is much warmer overall.
Soundstage in the DX1000 is larger.
Imaging and separation of the DX1000 is better.
The DX1000 walk all over the Kenwood in regard to refinement and detail.

The more than $500 price difference perhaps? $857 for HP-DX1000, $339 for KH-K1000.

And in regards to the D2000 comparison, you chose to only emphasize the D2000's strong points and not it's weaknesses. "Engaging" is something I value for my next can purchase and "an excellent allrounder" is just what I'm after. From impressions I've read, these seem to fit the bill.

I just got my set yesterday. Although I know that I am in my usual "new toy" phase I still have to say that I like them A LOT

Thank you Kees for bringing such a nice phone to my attention!

You're welcome.
No "new toy syndrome" for me (not any more). I've been enjoying the KH-K1000 for some time now, I use them every day and still think they are awesome.
I just listened to some Neil Young / Crazy Horse and these phones ROCK!!!
Glad you enjoy them. They'll get even better after some burn-in.

any new review for this can?

I have them on my head right now, thanks to Anouk.
They remind me a lot of the AKG K271 S, but then with a bass boost.
The earpads don't surround my ears, just like the K271.
The mids and highs are smooth, just like the K271.
They are a bit boring, just like, well you get the picture.
High are slightly rolled off. No sibilance.
The bass goes deep, with some music there is too much bass.
The soundstage is airy, but not wide.
For relaxed listening to acoustic and light pop/rock, they will fit the bill.
But I think they are way overpriced. Since the soundsig is almost the same as the K271, they should be priced accordingly.
The pleather earpads are sticky, but my main complaint is that my ears are too big. The pads are resting on my ears in a very uncomfortable way, especially with my eye glasses.
I like my Beyerdynamic DT 150 a lot more, in sound and comfort.
Disclaimer: All the above is with my gear and to my ears.

I didn't say that the Denon are better than the Kenwood.
If I had to choose, I would take the K1000 over the D2000 for sound.
For comfort, I found the Denon better.
I said that the K1000 is similair to the K271.
And some prefer this AKG to the Denon

It's definitely not thinner. To my ears and memory, it's more or less the same, Which is not to say that they are identical, they're not.
Maybe the Kenwood is a bit warmer.

The greatest virtues of the K1000 is their very clean sound. No hint of grain or sibilance. If you have a lot of sibilant recordings, this Kenwood is the best headphone I've heard to make listening to them bearable.
K1000 has a polite and friendly sound.

Hey everyone, As you can see I sent my kenwood to Tiemen to enjoy for a while. I liked its sound, i love a good soundstage but they are not really closed cans for me... just like the denons... They sit very loosely on my head and dont really have a good seal. I think the comparison with the k271 is apt. I only listened to the k271 for a few days though and it is months (and many headphones) ago. If you want a closed headphone for at home this might be the thing, I would not take this headphone with you on the go too much though... just like the akgs its earcup suspension system (if I say this right) is not the sturiest...
I am very happy with how well this headphone borrowing between head-fiers works out though...
Greetings, Anouk,

After some more days with the Kenwood, I come to the conclusion that this is a very good closed headphone if your music doens't have drums. They are unfortunately not able to reproduce the impact of drums and percussion.
The bass is slightly boomy and reminds me too many times of the overblown DT770 Pro bass.
I can see how these will be great with classical and folk music with their very smooth and liquid mids and highs.

The phones can do that perfectly, it is the amp that is lacking to properly control the drivers....

I have to agree. I quote enjoy the K1000's representation of percussion.
