I think 8.  Older K701s have 7.

Was very impressed this weekend by the K701 through the bifrost and lyr. I'm thinking this may be my next setup.

Congratulations! I ended up with the Yulong D100. I think for the most part it is on a par with the mini-i, with maybe a slight edge in dac quality going to the Yulong (based on reviews). It is able to drive the K701 well. I got a good deal on the Yulong, which is really the only reason I went with it instead of the mini-i.  I think with this set up, I'm pretty much done with solid states unless I suddenly come into quite a lot of money or decide to go balanced SS (or the amp building bug hits). My only next amp purchases will be to get a really good tube amp (for the beyer 880/600 and senn 600s).

I've been out of the headphone game for quite a while, as I have been building up my home theatre system.  Anyways, the tax return came in the other day and I felt it was time to build that headphone rig that I have always wanted.  No research was needed on the headphones, I've wanted the K701 for a couple of years now.  Bought the K701 and a Little Dot MKIII.  Amp has not come in yet, but I had the AKG's overnighted (Amazon Prime ftw) and let me say they are everything that I could have wanted.  I am coming from the Grado SR80 and I was simply tired of the sand paper comfort and narrow soundstage.
 
I am playing this through my NAD T747 home theatre receiver and boy do they sound fantastic.  Even through my Cowon S3, I think they are brilliant.  I've always heard that if you don't like these unamped, you wont like them amped.  Looks like I am in luck.  I must be especially lucky because I don't find these anemic, cold, or boring.   I think the bass is perfect too, even for heavier rock songs there is no problem.  I did play some dubstep for laughs and as expected, there was little to be heard.  Then I EQ'd alittle bit and boy these can really pump out the bass when commanded.  Of course the soundstage is crazy, at work I am CONSTANTLY looking behind me because I think something happened.  Nope.
 
Anyways, I'll end my rant because I can go all day.  I just don't see all the complaints about the lifelessness of these headphones, I was legitimately gearing to be underwhelmed when I opened the box and played them unamped for the first time.  I guess that is why they are the perfect headphones for me...

lol welcome to the club i think they are brilliant too. I think that especially guitar pieces sound spectacular and so realistic, also the drums, i think it does drums really well.

seriously? Read some impressions on head-fi and some said the sound changed slightly after they recabled them... oh man.

Certainly with my 702, recabling (with a variety of different types of materials and configurations) has made no difference. There is also no science to back up the idea that such a recable even *could* change the sound - but it is certainly a subject of debate here. And usually confined to the sound science sub-forum. 
 
My own experience is, no change. Recable for ergonomics/durability/looks - but not for sound.

Try asking a guy on this thread if he's ever tried Black Dragon.
His name is "Tdockweiler".
He has tried several different cables on his various K70x and Q701 cans.

Whilre there is very little science to support the idea that cables should sound different, there is very little science to support idea that a low distortion, low output impedance, wide bandwidth. low noise solid state headphone amplifier should sound any different than any other one.
Very little science to support the idea that various DACs should sound much different.
Or that one 6SN7 tube should sound much different than another 6SN7 tube.
Or that one low distortion, low noise Op Amp should sound any different than another low distortion, low noise Op Amp when used properly.
 
I think a lot of the differences in sound folks hear are either are greatly exaggerated or non-existent.
What can I say?
Some people claim to hear differences, some people claim they are all non-existent.

 
Take a look at some audiophile cable threats in the "Science" forum.  Wars have been fought over this. LOL

I found they would not play loud enough to listen to an ipod or iphone, so I concluded that it was unfair to evaluate them without adequate amplification. They definitely improved after breaking in. They also display clear differences between various amplifiers, including the headphone jacks on my AV receiver and my CD player, and two different headphone amps I've tried.
