Well no wonder I like them... Obviously the Essence ST pulls the same trick as the Heed... Tons of low bass to fill in the sound and bring some life to them. Suspect the Essence is a bit softer in the top end also which helps gettubg better balance with the K701 also

Just joined the 701's club! This is my second "quality" headphone (I had an ad700) and I'm absolutely delighted with the sound. It's a fantastic combination with jazz and classic and honestly I find myself listening more to the music then to the equipment, that is what happened with my previous speaker system. I'm currently using a cheap Rega Ear and V-DAC connected to a 15 years old CD player but I'm going to rebuild an dedicated system. Any suggest for amp and source? I'd like to use a Squeezebox and upgrade later the DAC, but no idea for the amp. Since I'll use the system in the living room I'd like a "single brand" amp and dac for esthetic reasons.

I wouldn't do it man. It simply would not have enough juice fro those power hungry phones. Get a hybrid headphone amp instead..

Are you sure? Look at this:

TPA6120A2 - High Fidelity Stereo headphone driver from TI. Each output goes to stereo headphone, where the listener enjoys crisp, clean music.
Therefore, users can experience hi-fi stereo without the need for an external amplifier.

Claro halo design excellently provides the output to high impedance headphone up to 600ohm. A jumper switch for the high impedance headphone setting is on the board ("HIGH" or "LOW")

Note: DO NOT CONNECT LOW IMPEDANCE HEADPHONE (under 32ohm) WITH "HIGH" SETTING.

I still wouldn't do it. It will not have enough power as PC slots have limited power plus it will most likely clip if under powered. Trust me I speak from experience.

I had the SR-80's for a while and I liked them but after wearing them for an hour or so they became uncomfortable to the point of annoying. I found myself not remembering what I'd listened to because I was too focused on the lack of comfort. I recently got a pair of these AKG-701's and don't think I could be happier. They sound great and they fit much better. I had some Sennheiser 570's and they sounded absolutely sludgy compared to these.

edited to correct Sennheiser model

Okay so the k701 is one of the cans i plan on getting - my first foray into headphones.

It kinda seems to me like the main gripe people have with these headphones are the lack of bass; impact or punch, whatever.

So.. are the k701s as bass-light as etymotics? I used to have one, and also an e4c (which was also too thin on the bass for me).

I'm using a se530 now and those work great for me; just the right amount of bass in them. Should i be expecting less bass on the k701 compared to the se530?

I'm using audioengine a5s with a styleaudio dac for my desktop. Will the k701 offer better sound, or should i be looking at more expensive headphones? I'm also wondering if the dac i'm using will provide sufficient juice to amp them (apparently, the dac provides enough juice for up to 300 ohms?)

i'm also considering the hd 600. From what i've read, am i right to say that the hd 600 is more veiled (some argue that it is due in part to the amp being used?), with more warmth and less detail compared to the k701?

Lastly, are there other cans at this price point that i should be considering as well?

Sorry for the many questions!

The SE530 and K701 doesn't sound alike at all. SE530 is warm sounding, and K701 is anything but. You'll get much more sub bass with SE530 where as in K701 it'll sound lacking with certain types of music.

If you want SE530 sound then HD650 is probably your best bet. That's not to say K701 aren't good, as I love mine. It's just of a complete different sound, is all.

I personally prefer it to the HD800. Don't get me wrong I think the HD800 is a great phone but I feel it isn't a better upgrade from the K701.

Why? I love the way my K701 sounds, so I am eager to know.

The HD800 has more resolution, isn't that so?
