In terms of conveying the "scale" of a symphony orchestra performance, I would give the edge to the K701. However, IMHE, I found the K501 superior to both the HD600 and the K701 for classical music.

Today I really likes my K701... Have been working hard with pink noise on them for a week now maybe starting to pay off. Or I am slowly getting used to them probably a combination. Much better tone in them now anyway. Can´t understate how much the LFE makes for these cans though. Really helps giving body to the music which is what it´s really is struggling with generally I feel.

buttkicker LFE is a transducer. I am using it´s own power amp. Need some 1500W to drive. Any amp that can deliver a 4 ohm load at that level should work though. It does have a high level input as well but it´s convenient with the cut off filters and there is no fan on it

.

Helps giving the bass impact/body that is so missed on the K701s often. Product Review

Maybe a bit overkill for many but I have a 90 kg steel cockpit to shake. If you just have a comfy chair or something a mini LFE would be more then sufficient I do believe especially for music where you can´t or don´t want to go as wild as you can with movies/games.

I'm getting this baby next.. I am also thinking of doing a recabling and making the cable white or silver, or maybe white cable with a silver braided sleeve.

A good source matters with any headphones. I just broke down and purchased a new Audio Note CD player (AN CD3.2x/II). I am breaking it on my SBH headphone amp with K-701s. I am just at the 500 hour mark and the CD player is beginning to open up (many Blackgates). I have never heard such a lovely sound through my 701s. It let's the detailed AND organic sound of the AN Dac (1.1x/II Signature) in my CD player come through without any coloration. My old (higher impedance) HD595s also sound pretty good, but they always add a "zippy" flavour to music that gets in the way of the NOS Dac's performance.

If you like a darker sound, buy the HD-650s.

Damn is this cool. I still got my K701 despite having it for sale. I liked it a lot but second favourite doesn´t go a long way for me. I am to lazy to constantly switch headphones.

But got some Essence ST yesterday and it really seem to be built for the K701. I have nothing to compare with since my rad is blocking the headphone output so I can only run my K701 through that and my Pro 900 line out to my Slee Solo. You wouldn´t expect that comparison to be the K701s favour but well it´s all about synergy

But superb synergy may even be better then with the Heed canamp. need to listen more to live recordings and movies to be sure! I have never heard the K701 like this. Rarely it does sound exhaggeratly bright in the upper treble like before. I have always got bass out of them but well with this setup they are actually warm with LOTs of body... Perhaps a bit smaller soundstage as a result but much more natural then on the Heed)

Yep. I have heard them all, from insanely expensive (own some insanely expensive Stax) to the new HD800(meh solid effing meh)

to cheap.. the 701s still reign supreme here. Have two pairs, one for studio, one for home.

Me too, well a K701 and upgraded K702

I personally prefer it to the HD800. Don't get me wrong I think the HD800 is a great phone but I feel it isn't a better upgrade from the K701.

The HD485 makes bad recordings sound good as well.

About the K70X, I love how you hear all the micro detailing and editing mistakes. The clarity/transparency on these things is amazing and how fluid they sound as well.

Zombie_x, I have the headroom ultra micro. What are the new things that the xcanv8 bring in comparison, sound wise? The xcanv8 is cheaper, would it make my K701 sound better?
