I found the FXT90s fun, energetic and exciting, whilst at the same time maintaining an excellent level of detailing throughout the frequency spectrum.

The FXT90s however are far less easy to categorize. They are mid centric, but extended well at both ends. They're very forward sounding, but not aggressive. They're fairly smooth, yet in no way laid back. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about them is the way in which they create an unprecedented (in my limited experience) balance between fun / coloration and technical proficiency. The best of both worlds in my opinion.

Absolutely couldn't agree more.

For pure comfort with these, nothing will beat Comply Ts400 (please note the s for spherical after the T). They fit even large ears.

If you're a silicon fan, don't go triple flange with these JVCs, double flange with large bore size will be more than enough for isolation.
And BTW, if you have large ears (like myself), MEElec double /triple flange tips will be too small for you (even the large size).

My experience & comparisons with the DBA might be a little different since I've had them reshelled.  1964Ears made sure to measure & preserve the original signature, though.  While they do sound better than when they were unis (punchier bass, more balanced, cleaner overall sound, slightly wider soundstage, and better weighted notes) gains in technically proficiency were marginal, at best.

That being said, the DBA's soundstage is wider & airier relative to the FXT (even in the DBA's universal incarnate).  The FXT's treble can be just as crisp as the DBA's but the JVC's (relatively) thicker note makes it sound slightly less airy & open.  The DBA enjoys slightly better treble detail and resolution but the aggressive nature of it's overall presentation can make this feel more perceived than real.  Soundstage depth, no doubt, goes to the FXT.

Thanks!   Which double flange would fit these if not the Meelec?  Hifiman?

I have never used foam tips, and always used the standard Etymotic tripple flanges, and liked them a lot.

So the Ts's should stay in pretty good?

I have no clue what size comply(i see the ts is M only so that is easy), or double flanges to order, that is another problem.lol

Thanks again.

You don't have to chose a size with Ts series, it is one-size-fits-all.
They should fit well unless you have very small ears.

Just for info, I can't use even very large silicon tips (too small for me) and I achieve a perfect fit with Ts400 and Ts500.

The thing is that FXT90 have large nozzles (around 4-5mm diameter), so you have to use large bore tips. Which gives you less tip choice than for IEMs with small nozzles (1-3mm diameter).

I don't have advice for large bore double flanges, couldn't find any to fit my jumbo ears (I tried all the MEElec large ones, 30$ for nothing with shipping fees...)

I just got back from Japan... Bought the Victor JVC EP-FX4 foam tips for these IEMs (from Labi), based on what Amazon.co.jp linked them to. Just swapped the tips -- fit well, sound good. They're the smooth surface "olive" type.

I'm interested in peoples preferences regarding depth of insertion. Comfort aside, which do you prefer sonically between deep and shallow?

My favourite thus far are the silicon UE tips with shallow insertion – I’m waiting for my MEElecs to arrive.  Although I prefer the speed and control of deep insertion, the forwardness of the sound encroaches on me a little, where it borders on edgy. I'm sure that this will be remedied by Monster Foams when they arrive, or Comply Ts-400 if I ever see them cheaper / for trade.

This is of course fuelled by my chronic addiction to the search, rather than a bothersome fit issue, as I’m actually very happy with the UE / shallow insertion!

My MEElec tips turned up, as did my Foam Super Tips. Unfortunately, both are useless to me... the Supers are too big, and the MEElecs too small. Looks like I'll have to sit it out with the UE single flange until the Jays and fake hybrids arrive. I can handle this, as they work just fine with my FXT90s.

However, I'm open to trades if anybody needs Large Foam Super Tips or medium MEElec 'balanced sound' double flanges. PM if you're interested.

Seeming as MEElec only make their standard double flange in medium, I'm curious to try their shortened double flange (comes in s,m,l) and their single flange. Has anybody tried these on the FXT90s yet?

Get both?

Their signatures are worlds apart, so they compliment each other well.

I find the GR07’s detailed albeit non-fatiguing nature to be perfect for passive and low volume listening (though they’re equally enjoyable at moderate-loud volumes). They're my favourite IEMs for use whilst in bed, or whilst doing things during the day, as I can flip between active and passive listening with relative ease. Something I frequently get whilst using the GR07s is a background awareness of a song, which gradually grows and builds in my subconscious, so that when the song reaches a crescendo (or lets rip a phatta-than-yo-mumma bass line), I experience a sudden explosion in awareness and associated foot tapping.

In stark contrast, the FXT90s are blatant and in my face from the start. Though not aggressive, they’re certainly assertive, and never permit me anything less than active listening, feet tapping, head nodding, emotion charged head shaking, seizure'esque dancing… you get the picture.

In summary, I couldn't let either go as they both play equally improtant roles in my life. Forgive me for my self indulgence however, as I'm aware that you may have a tight budget. Perhaps you could try both out?
