Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

I'm trying to find some pads to improve my soon BMF#3 modded T50rp and can't really decide whether to buy LCD-2 pads or Beyer gel pads.
At the moment some SRH840 are fitted and I wish to improve isolation and sound quality.
 
Do you guys recommend the LCD-2 or beyer gel pads over the SRH840?

If I can recall correctly, I thought the Beyerdynamic gel pads didn't come with outer "skins" of leather or pleather to make mounting them capable.  However, I could be wrong.
 
Also, in the past, Audeze wouldn't sell their pads without being a purchaser of their headphones.  But, there are companies that sell the pads separately at this point.  Moon-Audio is one such company and there might be others.
 
The Shure 840 pad is a great "standard" to use and normally runs about $20.00 with shipping included from B&H Photo in the U.S.  Additionally, you might also consider the Brainwavz HM5 pads from MP4Nation.  They run approximately $16.00 a pair, with free shipping from Hong Kong.  The free shipping takes about two weeks for the item to arrive.  But, you do have the option of paying a bit more to receive an expedited or faster shipping option.
 
The only thing with regards to the HM5 pads is that the mounting of them onto the Fostex cups can be a bit tricky, when compared to the others.  The HM5 pads are approximately 1" smaller in circumference when comprared to the cup circumference on the Fostex headphones.  One has to be a bit careful when stretching these pads onto the cup to prevent any tears.  I was able to mount mine, but didn't want to risk tearing the pads, so I ended up adhering them to the Fostex cups via some strips of leather than I was able to cut to size and bond them using an adhesive.
 
Finally, there are the pads from HifiMAN from their "HE" series of headphones.  The velour pads cost $10 for the pair.  The pleather cost $20 per pair.  Both options require about $6.00 additionally, for shipping.  The pads arrive mounted to plastic rings so they will easily fit onto the HifiMAN headphones.  But, all one needs to do is to slip the pads off of the plastic ring, then they can be mounted on the Fostex cups.
 
Hopefully, these options provide you with some guidance and will allow you to move ahead.

The replacement pair had worse bass rattle.. and had it in both drivers. I decided to just work with them though. I could never hear the rattle during music, only when throwing low hz sine waves at em.
 
I modded my headphones all the way up to the DBV #3 in three steps. Acoustic foam/felt & Newplast, then treble reflector and felt over driver, then the fiberglass and cotton.  A touch too much treble and a touch light on the bass currently.. Gonna "tune" with BMF's suggestions tomorrow. I'm ecstatic about the sound though, with a touch more tweaking.. It will be perfect. Very exciting stuff here guys.
 
I'll also post some stuff about that cotton I bought. With some effort, it works, but it's far from ideal. Too tired to say more for now.. Zzz.

If you can get a hold of a pair, the JMoney Beyer pads are fantastic. I have a pair of LCD-2 rev 1 pads on their way to me, and might try my LCD-3 pads just to see what differences there are. I have a review written up for the JMoney pads, but am waiting to do a roundup of pads along with the Shure's once the LCD-2 pads arrive.

Not, to kick a dead horse too many times, but you could try stacking some shure srh14440/1840 velour pads on top of the stock pads with mounting tape

I have used felt with plastic
and toolbox liner with paper..
and felt, paper, liner- shown.

I made it extra long so I wouldn't have to have the fostex band sticking several inches off the top of my head. It works pretty well and is super comfortable. I might make it a little less long, I haven't decided yet. I'd hate to mess it up because I don't have any more pleather to work with.

All I did was eyeball the cut and then use some contact glue, fold it in half, do a bit more trimming so every thing looked right and then stuck it under some books for the glue to cure. I love contact glue for stuff like this.

I just started to get interested in the t50rp, afaik there are 2 versions of them, how do they compare unmodded? The material that I can get is probably only the blu-tack, maybe the transpore tape as well if I search for them, with these materials to mod with, on which version will the mods have a better result?

Uhhh, there are actually three versions. One really old with some gross pads that work terribly. One with new pads, but lighter colored gold rods and different paper on the back. One with new pads and darker colored gold rods and different paper on the back. Honestly, it's probably a toss up on which one is better and not worth worrying about.

With those materials... You aren't gonna be able to accomplish much. You are going to at least need some fiberglass/cotton and some stiffened felt. That being said, they really don't sound as bad stock as people make them out to be on here.. They are worth 100 bucks stock, just they have a lot of room for improvement with modding. Basically, you should definitely try harder to get your hands on some modding materials.

Not really.. it is a 3.5mm jack, but the hole is kinda deep. Most plugs don't really fit without some innovation unless they have slim plugs (like the v-moda cable)

It was actually a cable from my M80s I was planning to try =P I'll be using the stock cable most of the time (Unless I get round to modding them) with my desktop setup, but a smaller cable would be nice for using them on the go.

I don't think the M80 cable will work.

The stock cable is really bad :/ Don't be surprised if you get a bunch of noise at the jack or even some channel imbalance problems, some deoxit or a new cable are usually what fixes that.. The new cable being a more long term solution. I'd suggest one of those vmoda cables, even if you are gonna keep stuff stock. Actually, I'd suggest the v moda cable and shure pads if you are going to keep it stock
