Rubber cement or Super glue? To attach the Creatology stiff felt?

I'd rubber cement it.  Properly done, it won't have any issues holding, but you'll still be able to remove it in the future if you want to.

Hi,

What genres do you prefer listening to with the T50rp ?

If you guys are interested I'm trying to start a group buy for the famous Tunderpants (already modded t50rp) here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/572793/thunderpants-t50rp-mod-group-buy#post_7771068

Hmmm, consider the favorable effects of a pin hole in masking tape temporarily covering and serving as a bass port tuner.  I wonder if something 1000 times larger, like the central compartment plate (#18) located directly behind the center of the driver, could have audible effects "naked" vs cloaked with Paxmate...positive vs negative?

There's only one way to find out.

Inquiring minds, ya know?

Very good point.. I might stuff some acoustic foam behind it just do off with the plate.  I also noticed the location of where I puncture the hole in the vent could have an impact on the sound.  LFF mentioning he has a few pin holes in his vent has me thinking about punching a few holes in different places to see what happens.  The area behind the plate is also directly behind the center of the driver.. who knows how properly damping it could affect the sound..

I'm going to see what I find.. at least until I run out of masking tape.. lol.

Modding these things is a very rewarding experience. And, by following in the footsteps of the modding pioneesrs, the results can be quite astounding.  I've been pragmatic about listening to the phones after I've made each mod (all in accord with the mrspeakers' rastapants mods) for several hours. Here's what I've heard:

  • Paxmate the cups -- shaved off most of the upper mid peak that are typical of stock T50RP but the result was something akin to AM radio
  • Plasticine the baffles -- The spectrum opened up a bit, but not a huge amount of extension in either direction. But a big improvement in reducing resonance and "cup-yness."
  • Swapping pads -- I had discounted swapping pads and the use of foam donuts under them but I'm a believer now. I've used different foam donuts with stock pads and JVC HA-RX900 pads. Adding shims of craft-store foam beneath the RX900 pads created a sense of soundstage, extended the high end (not the tizzy sound I enjoy in some other cans, but something better integrated all the same) and, thanks to the better seal, a bottom end worth listening to.

I still have the white baffle cloth, the rear vents and a reflex dot to tinker with, but I think they're already respectable phones for the price. This is really, really fun.

Nice one! :D

You really did a neat/good job there \m/

Bingo.  After properly sealing the plate, I did not put acoustic foam on it.  Shouldn't make a difference though considering how thoroughly the rest of the cup is dampened.

A wise man once asked:           "If a tree falls inside my acoustically-treated T50RP cup.. does it make a noise?"

The Head-Fi pupil answered:     "Depends on how big the vent hole is."

L0000L! I JUST FINISHED. They're on my head. What do I do now? I guess it's ti---woah.... Not bad.... I'm stock Rasta pants now. It needs moar reflex dot and acoustic ear baffle foam, but I'm done other than that. NOT bad at ALL!

For stock cable I'm very impressed. These will be an HD 650 sound-alike (I'm just noticing now they're better in many ways) Woah, Hennyo liiiikes: So much more potential!

So from stock Rasta : what I would recommend (need to do)

- Needs moar reflex dot imo just on the center driver. The treble needs to be seperated from the mids - fleshed out.

I removed felt on the earside.

I can see how angling these drivers would be EPEPPIICCZZZZZZXDFHDGHJ!!~!@#!

Mine need ear baffle acoustic foam, reflex dot, and recable. YES! And O2 pads/ a deterrent. The point is: we are transmorgifying this phone and it is impressive.

EDIT: It's definitely better than HD 650.

Stock cable moddified T50rp is a bit better (10ish%) than Stock cabled HD 650. After final mods and recabeling the T50rp, it's goona be a sad story for the recabled 650's. A morbid story.

Oh, and it does sound very similar to LCD-2 rev 1 and two. Heard them both recabled a couple weeks back. After I'm finished I'm guessing 75-80% and maybe 85 or 88%ish with O2 pads. I think these would benefit from angling. I'm really enjoying it now.

I'm so incoherent right now..

Gah I just love these moments. : )

Hey Hennyo,

That sounds great!  Congratulations on getting it "right" on your (I assume) first mod of these phones!

Queueing Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Session after Doug. Stupendous bass, mids and air on these T50RPs! These are truly EAR SPEAKERS!

Just finished the Accoustic foam ear baffles. Phew, my ear isn't touching the driver anymore. Still tweaking it...
