Is anybody using closed-cell foam in any of their mods? I feel like someone has mentioned their usage of it before with the T50RP. I've read some reports that it works well in damping subwoofers.

Read up on that, interesting. At once read a bit on bass traps, made them and the proid's Helmholz resonator more understandable.
Though I'm afraid closed cell foam may have negative effect on high frequencies, increasing reflectivity there. IIRC, some more advanced soundproofing foams have two layers, top layer with open cells, bottom layer with closed cells. Or you can do it yourself by slapping open-cell over closed-cell, but it would be way too thick. The question of balance. Though if lining the whole cup is not required, then there shouldn't be any problem, as far as I see.

For the reference - modding without any reference and without even having any preferences is indeed problematic. I can only sort out obviousy problematic areas such as peaks and dips. Other than that, I don't really know. How much bass there should be, how much treble, etc. Though I think I can stick to equal loudness curves, though, and judge by them.

One more bit on the bass part and bracing enclosure - I've thought about putting an additional spacer over the rubber pads over the columns. Thought it may increase enclosure resonance frequency and resonance's Q. May be some more effect, I know about the techniques, but don't have enough time for real investigation on what results do they really make and how the results vary on the application. Didn't try it though, and not sure if I would be able to hear any result if there would be any at all.
Besides, in the Roundup thread, an jelly gasket sealant has been mentioned - may do a better job than plasticine due to better decoupling of baffle and cup. Though one would probably have to apply it around screws somehowas well to have effect, or there would still be rigid contact points.

I am a 4 year owner of the HD650 and all I can say is that this $74 headphone sounds just as great or even better than the HD650. The mids of this headphone are insane. I am running this through my Presonus Firestudio unamped. Can't wait to try it amped. Just a question will modding them into thunderpants have a huge impact on sound of these headphones. I am already digging these stock, I might even consider making these my main headphones and setting the 650 aside and making them my secondary headphones. These headphones are just phenomenal. I am just saddened that these headphones don't cost more.

Your statement is quite interesting.  I've been meaning to try the HD-650 from Sennheiser at some point to see what I thought about them.  In regards to your disappointment on the cost, please don't be.  About a month ago, the T50RP supply nearly dried up and some people were charging about $139 for a pair.  $74.00 is a very happy price point for me and many others.

Has anyone tried this material for stuffing the cups? The product description is very promising (better than Dacron, foam, and fiberglass, apparently).

Edit: Just read a quick post from some other forums. Apparently it performs about as well as fiberglass, but it more expensive. I'm wondering if it would be safer to handle, though.

I found a post I read a long while back from rhythmdevils about using Creatology craft foam/felt (adhesive) instead of Paxmate or Silverstone acoustic foam. I might guy my currently modded T50RP and try his idea out with the material I linked to above.

Been holding off on 840 pads for maybe getting HM5/FA003 pads (they look so comfy!). All the places everyone else mentioned to get them, I can't find them! Also I don't really understand the fit issues people were talking about sewing a sock to them or something??? I'm confused haha.

But man these stock pads are really getting to me. So uncomfortable, even when lifted.

I've tried the Fiberglass already, bought some a Home Depot, increased bass like crazy, and killed off the treble. Cotton was much better.

My experience is totally opposite. I tried swapping between fiberglass, cotton and i find that fiberglass definitely make bass tigher, less mid bass and treble more extend than cotton.

Aaron, you can try here http://www.studiospares.com/stu-m1000-spare-earpads-x2/invt/448767/
It seems to be a HM-5/FA-003/Lindy remodel

Thanks! Checking it out now and was curious of total cost after shipping and it has a required field of "House Name". Not sure what to put here since my house doesn't have a name :P

Never mind just put N/A to see what it would cost.

Does anyone else think the T50rp's have a huge amount of sub bass? Or is it my config?

Mine goes down to 13Hz at normal volume levels. There is plenty of sub-bass that this headphone can put out.

I just got a set of Grado SR-80s to compare yesterday.  And it make me realize how good a value these modded Fostex are.

The Grado really aren't that bad, quite a bit of detail, a pretty big mid-bass hump, some heightened highs.  But the T50-RPs have much more detail, tighter (though not as much) and lower bass, the highs are more natural, and the mids are in a totally different league all together.

The SR-80i goes $99 new (I got the non-i version, 2nd hand for $50), and a modded T-50RP is about $120 to $130, but are much much better.

I am now off to modding those SR-80s.  Gonna be fun.

I've seen a few of you guys swapping between cotton and fiberglass. Haven't noticed anyone try a blend of the three fills, polyfill, fiberglass and cotton. Has anyone done this?

I was doing some reading on fatmat vs. dynamat and saw some comments on a couple of automobile boards suggesting that fatmat has a tar-like odor (that dynamat does not have).  IMO, this might warrant the price premium.  Can anyone comment on this?

I've used raamat and it doesn't have any odors. Can't comment on fatmat.
