Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!

Looking again at the curve, the slope would seem to be more like 20 dB per half octave. (1 octave is 1 decade of frequency, correct?)
 
However, I do not trust my laptop at all for high frequencies, since I hear a weird echo on multiple headphones from time to time. I don't want to show a plot until I repeat this on my desktop.
 
Bass lens - I can try this. Is this what Sony do with their MDR (F1 etc) line?

BTW, try to make 'bass lens' on the front of the driver - a cover of some (not dense) damping material, like the silk coffee filter, with a hole in center. A 15*15mm square hole would be ok, I think..

135 bucks is not bad for fully assembled model. might pick one up out of curiosity.

was doing some more work on my fostex earlier and now they sound even more open than my k601's.

Yeah I guess, but when you think about it only costing around $75 in parts (with the Tenergy batteries, 080 box, and faceplate), you're paying $60 alone in assembly fee for less than 3 hours of work.  That's over $20/hr.

Don't forget some of us would have to drop money on equipment to put the thing together, narrowing the cost down.

Not to mention I'd rather spend the extra money knowing I'll be getting a properly assembled unit rather than relying on my own skills.

I think the only option is to get the parts like you said (Mouser for most parts, eBay for Batteries, Chassis box from some else???) or buy fully built.
 
You can check on the DIYAudio site for Group Buy to save on the shipping cost.

Have you even checked out anything about the O2 at all?  NwAvGuy makes is so easy.  You literally import the BOM from his site into Mouser and make one single order.  I suggest you read a little before you continue.
 
Also, about "relying on my own skill":  The amp has no wiring, surface mount, or board mounting to do.  You literally stick each component into its said location and solder the joints.  Its like a CMoy but takes 30 minutes longer, if that. 
 
You can find out where to read about in through a google search since we can't post that link. 
 
 
EDIT:  I'm going to be trying a few bit of mod on my T50RP's soon, and hopefully with those cable components coming in shortly, I can test out the O2 + T50RP combo by the end of the week?

Oh, I realize that much, but Mouser doesn't carry the PCB, case or front panel.  It's just a bit of a pain to have to order everything from all of these different places.  Shipping doesn't come cheap here in Canada...
 
That said, I'm just going to wait on the desktop model, I have absolutely no need for a portable amp this big.  Even the Fiio E7 is pushing it for me.

You mean like ordering the PCB and front panel from JDS Labs together?  The case is up to your disgression on what you want to use, but if you want to use the 080 or whatever, Digikey has it. 
 
You can't really expect a DIY project to be as easy as "here's everything" and its done.  People buy amps completed for a reason: They're lazy.  If you're lazy, you'll find yourself purchasing an amp.  If you're not lazy, you can DIY.  Making 10 more clicks with your mouse to get the rest of the parts you need is pretty darn easy.  I don't see why you're complaining about it so much.
