The best real portable device is the Nanonite Flo2 right now if you want loseless and digital out.  I love my HM-801 but my friends Nanoite is more to take along to the gym.

neither the HIfiman or the SFlo2 can output digital
 
they do both have pretty good lineouts though

My Akai portable DVD player has coax digital out, but it didn't seem to do anything with audio CD's, only with DVD.

Haha yeah, you got my hopes up there... Especially for that kind of money, I could be tempted to pick up something with coax digital out. (USB output seems much less likely.)

A friend of mine modified his iRiver iHP-140, so now it has coaxical out instead of optical.

My Panasonic CDP (7" screen) plays both music and movies, and the optical out is fantastic. As a transport for $149.00, it's great deal.
 
Will have to look up the model #.  It's also great on long family car trips for the young-ins. But take into consideration that you have to enter back into the world of "CD's".

Well that, yeah... and but like.. I don't know how to tell you this, but the JH-3A isn't going to have an optical in.

So only the discontinued iRiver H140 so far for S/PDIF. If the JH-3A has usb, what portable devices (other than ipad) can output digital via usb?

HM-801 (not sure about the 602). Almost any laptop (Macbook Air's pretty portable).

Congratulatrions indeed, immtbiker! I do not however believe that the HM-801 can output USB (or coaxial) to drive a DAC. Those are DAC inputs. According to the site, it has only headphone and line outs.

Yes the hm-801 will not do digital out via USB or coax.
At the moment it is only the iPad that will do 16/44 digital out. (with camera connection kit)
But...... There is a device comming out that will do full 24/192 hi Rez digital out via coaxial. It is called the colorfly. I'll attach a picture. It will hopefully be released in the not too distant future and is rumored to sell for around 250 euros. You can't change the amp like in the hm-801 but apart from it's looks, I like it.
It seems to be the ideal (& only digital out via coax) portable companion for the jh-3a.
