The answer is yes, hells yes. I must admit I don't like AKGs in general; so the HD800 is a million times better, IMO.

dude, that is an over statement --- HD800 is only 987,885 times better.

We all have different preferences, but honestly, even though I'd take HP1000s over HD800s any day of the week, I can't see how anyone can say the K701 does much anything the HD800 can't do...just...miles...better.

I think the speaker like presentation Sennheiser has made with the HD800 is about as good as it gets as far as dynamics headphones (not to to say the future could be better)

Still not a true speaker listening experience.. and I don't think anything EVER will be until you strap a boom box to your head

While I'm guessing that the Sennheiser sounds great but it's best to audition.
One thing that I learned at attending meets is that other people's opinions don't matter. Your ears are the best judge, not the internet. I plan on A/Bing the new Sennheiser and the k701 at a future meet in New York and will decide with my reference CDs.

If I really had to buy from a "carefully seleceted and authorized dealer" - no internet shopping, no foreign orders, no proprietary online shop -, that's the least the one dealer can do!

HD 800 is what Akg 701 could have been. AKG really f up ergonomics of 701, dumb humps on the headband, cups height adjustment and bass response. I still like K 701 with classical music but having HD 800 I put them back in the box. Same with Edition 9. For me Third time is charm. Anyone looking for K 701 or E9 PM me.

yuhp! I was quite impressed with their sound. The 701, HD650 and DT880 sounded kind of dull after listening to the 800's. They are big though.

There is only one option the see if there is any "improvement".
HD800- Phonitor -K702. And this is the best way to get the big picture of what the 800 are, and who they compare with the K702. If you want high definition test, Phonitor is the answer.
