Introducing LUNA by DUNU, the world's first pure beryllium rolled foil diaphragm flagship dynamic in-ear! (Page 18: Loan Tour Announcement)

Yeah and using the same tech doesn’t mean the LUNA is a Utopia clone in IEM form... I’d be wary of such speculation...

Yes, we did no such thing with the LUNA. Our audio engineer merely bought the Utopia because it is seen as a major benchmark in the headphone world, and the fact that it utilized a beryllium diaphragm made it an easy choice. It was used for listening tests (and for appreciating all the hard work Focal put into it), and we did not reverse engineer anything. In the real world, in-ears sound quite different from full-sized headphones, with wholly different presentations. Even so, the concept of 'soundstage' or 'headstage' and whether it truly exists with headphones and earphones when compared to speakers is a big topic of contention.

Our main approach for LUNA was to create the most authentic timbre reproduction we could and frame an accurate tonal balance within a relaxing, layered sonic milieu. When we first started the project, Materion showed us a model from which we could work with to quickly produce a working prototype. We didn't go with that design because it only included a central dome that contained the beryllium foil. For us, it was imperative we made the entire surface area responsible for sound reproduction was beryllium. We scrapped the design entirely and created one from the ground up, and this is the design found in the LUNA.

I’ve never spent over $1000 on any component in any of my audio systems. However this might be the first. I’m very excited that you are using TruExtent for the driver construction.

Also, fantastic job on the marketing. The press release was informative and artistic. The follow up replies on social media have also been well written. As an old guy I can appreciate the professionalism.

Perhaps this is a question that you might not answer directly (due to professional reasons), but just yesterday, Final also unveiled their flagship IEM: A8000, and from the blown-out internal diagram they seem to be using this "beryllium central dome" that you guys have mentioned. So it would seem that even though the A8000 has a pure beryllium diaphragm, Dunu will be the only one with an entire driver surface made out of Be - is that correct?

Yeah it does appear that the A8000 also uses a pure beryllium foil diaphram material. It's possible that both these IEMs were developed at the same time and just so happened to be released around the same time too coincidentally, which is kind of unfortunate for both companies.

EDIT: actually yeah I think you're right, it looks like the A8000 might use beryllium foil only for the dome, whereas the Luna uses it for the whole surface

Even if the two use the driver materials, there are some key differences just by glossing through the A8000 page:
  • A8000 uses a stainless steel chassis while the Luna uses titanium, so the A8000 will likely be heavier in comparison
  • Luna is ~$100 cheaper ($1699 vs ~$1800 with current Yen to USD exchange rate). The $1800 for A8000 is the "preorder" price, whatever that means.
Of course, there's no way to know how either will sound like as both haven't been released yet. However, the A8000 seems like it's shipping out in mid-december, so we'll probably get impressions for that way ahead of the Luna, which ships in February it looks like. We can see the accessories package for the A8000, which seems pretty standard; I hope the Luna comes with the Dunu cable termination swapping system seen on other products like the DK-4001, as that would be awesome.

All-in-all, congratulations to both companies for moving IEM technology forward with pure beryllium foil diaphrams. But I think I'm more excited for the Luna, as it's cheaper, should be lighter, and I really appreciate the openness of @DUNU-Topsound so far. Wish there were more measurements/frequency response graphs released (again, that pistonic motion looks nice). Of course we could wait until the loaner come around february, but that's a long time to wait.

Dunu is distributor of toxic cable, I hope they use their connection to come up with a cable worthy of Luna. I'm so much looking forward to Luna.

When it comes to enjoying music, for me Dynamic driver does it, nothing else. I'm sure A8000 would sound just as good, but I give to Dunu for going all the way out.

No doubt the Luna cable will be great, the Dunu Noble for the 4001 was fantastic craftsmanship although I didn’t like its signature as I stated in my DK-4001 review. I love my Hulk as well and the Lyre for 3001 Pro was already pretty good as well.

It is correct that it wouldn't be prudent of us to comment on another manufacturer's product. We can state that Final Audio Design is a well-respected manufacturer, especially in the world of hi-fi, and we both respect and admire their heritage and track record of bringing out unique, delightful offerings in the world of audio. But the fact that two manufacturers independently came to use the same core material for a flagship level in-ear speaks to the incredible performance potential of pure beryllium foil, and our goal from the very beginning was to maximize its performance with the LUNA.

The Quick-Switch modular plug cable system will be available for LUNA.

We will start with small form mini-meets in the Southern California region in December and January, and have impressions from key figures in the community trickling in during this time as well. Ideally, we'll also have two units available for listening tours.

The cable that was used with the LUNA in Shanghai and Tokyo was the NOBLE, our mixed strand copper and silver cable with a dedicated copper shielding. As this cable, as high quality as it is, is already used on the DK-4001, we're currently still exploring other options to pair with the LUNA, all the way until just before release.

Release of Luna will be February?

Our goal is actually the end of December for its release, but we didn't want to oversell our ability to deliver on that goal because of the complexities related to driver fabrication. However, by February, it'll be available pretty much everywhere, and that is why we plan on holding a release party for it in NYC, but the first production units will be ready by late December. We're still tabling a few options related to its rollout, including a limited pre-order, which may allow people who have already decided to purchase LUNA to get it at the earliest available date.

Will pre-orders come w the final production cable or with the Noble?

edit: changed cable name to Noble

They'll absolutely come with the final production cable. We actually just confirmed the cable specifications itself. It will be based around the NOBLE cable, so it will also have an outer shielding layer (the main differentiating feature of this cable that probably brings the most measurable gains to crosstalk suppression), but the sheath material will be color-matched to LUNA's design scheme, just like how the final silicone ear tips will be oceanic blue in color to reflect Earth's color tone as seen from outer space.

EDIT: So, just to make it clear, we will not ship varying versions of the LUNA and its accompanying package of accessories. There won't be any 'beta testing' going on here.
