Introducing CL2 Planar (Impressions Thread)

Apr 9, 2019 at 5:09 PM Post #2,326 of 3,158
I remember seeing in the thread that others have heard significant differences in the CL2 when using more powerful amps.

Up till now I have been using the balanced output of my portable with very good results, but I was able to get a balanced output adapter for my desktop DAC/Amp & I am very impressed at how well the CL2 scales with the extra power.

I also received my new 8 and 16-core cables yesterday and am trying out the 8-core. I am not sure what the ratio of gain improvements are between the desktop amp and the new cable, but the combination is excellent. I cannot wait to try the 16-core.

Yikes! If it's out of warranty pull out the superglue.

Hit up @RHA Team
They should be able to replace them.
You are going to have to burn in the new pair, bummer.

Warranty is 3 years.

Yeah looks like just the glue came apart, no other damage. You might just be able to superglue it back together. Gorilla super glue should do the trick.

At least we all now know what the insides look like.

Hi, can you be more specific about the improvements in sound with the desktop amp?

Ehh, I wouldn't recommend gorilla glue, that glue expands like crazy, and consequently will ruin the acoustic geometry of the IEM shell, if not disable the driver completely by expanding into the holes. Gorilla glue expands like 5x the liquid volume...I tried it on electronics in the past, no good.

I would just send it in to RHA, worth getting fixed even if they charge a small fee.

The gorliia super glue does not expand. It has an applicator brush that makes delicate repairs like this very doable.
I've used it on other iems before no problem.
But yes, the safest option would be to go through RHA.

I may be imagining it, but to me everything sounds tighter, cleaner, and more natural. I am also still hearing some subtle things in tracks that I have not heard before. Separation and placement are also really nice. The sub bass has more presence as well.

Granted I believe some of these improvements can be attributed to a degree to the new cables I am using, but certainly not all of them.

I am asking because I've been toying with the idea of getting a portable amp.

I have a good portable DAC/amp that has a lot of power and balanced output as well, and I really enjoy the sound out of it, but the desktop just takes it to the next level.

The portable is always running when I leave the house, but when I want to chill at home I can take the time to really enjoy the desktop.

It all depends on your use case and budget, but if you can get a good portable and a good desktop, I do not think you would regret it.

Going back to universal fit IEMs after almost 3 years with custom fit has been an interesting experience. Given the extra large size of my ear canals tip rolling is an interesting proposition.

The Spinfit CP 240's I have been using do give me a good seal, but the comfort factor leaves a bit to be desired, especially for long listening periods.

Aside from attempting a complete DIY re-shell to custom, the only option I have found is a custom IEM sleeve made by Snugs. It looks to me that it could be the ultimate in tip rolling for seal and comfort.

However, they are in the UK, and while many RHA IEMs are on their compatibility list, the CL2 is not listed. It is cost prohibitive for me to send my CL2's from the US for them to scan.

@RHA Team do you think it would be worth it for you to work with Snugs to send them a set of CL2's so they can be added to the list? Hopefully enough folks in this thread would find it worthwhile.

Check with Jerald at sound molds . com

Thanks. I just looked at their site, but it does not mention anything about how they match the molds to individual IEMs. With Snugs, they scan the IEMs and incorporate the shape into their molds.

I will send them a note to see what they say.
