If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

never happened to me with ety foams or size 100 comply foam. I just tilt the IEM up slowly, then down slowly and that compresses the foam for a moment and makes more than enough room to take the IEM out without any resistance.

I open my jaw. Not sure if that helps me or if it's just habit

Yeah, this time I probably just tried to yank it out a little too fast. Got a first class upgrade on a flight and had to keep popping them in and out because the flight attendant kept asking questions. The shure-style mic would be nice.

Just finish building this: ER4SR balanced cable with Sony 4.4mm TRRRS plug.

I do not have my Etys anymore but they, along with the UE Super.Fi 5Pro, were the best in-ears I have tried. Flash forward a decade and I'm REALLY satisfied with the $60 Fiio EX1 gen2. They aren't Etys but they are satisfying for their cost. Miss the sweet midrange of both the UE and Etys but I can live without it.

Is the improvement noticeable?

Can't say, as I built this for someone else. I don't actually have any Sony gears with 4.4mm output, though I do hear that Sony's balanced-out tends to be noticeable better than its single-ended.

the sound attenuation on these things with the correct ear tips is second to none. Better than silicone and acryllic CIEMs for sure! and I had really good fit on both.

I think the official claim of 35-42 dB sound isolation seems very much true and correct.

Do not take these out for a jog/drive or anything that needs aural attention

Yes, totally agree with you on the advice of not using the ER4 when we jog/drive due to the isolation. I've used it many times when I was performing on stage with several bands through the Aviom peronal monitoring system and I just love it. I even converted 2 musician friends of mine to the ER4

Well after 15 mins in single end I knew I had to cut the plug and do the decent thing to the XR's ......

Night and day, single very good, balanced excellent! Very good match like them better than every other iem ive tried with the Sony so far , nice fit isolation excellent very comfortable. Was a bit dubious that they wouldn't give me the right amount of low end after reading reviews ..... fear not they don't disappoint at all bass is tight and just the right amount when needed. Find it hard to believe I overlooked these iems , weekend off work so it's time to go through some classic albums!

Now to make a custom cable, pics to follow! 14990009596061050120701.jpg

I need some advice on cleaning the inner housings of an ER4. I'm guessing that over time, small particles from the ear or left by evaporating moisture may build up inside, past the filter, and form deposits near the driver itself, possibly causing a performance difference due to blockage or frequency absorption. How can I safely go about cleaning the inside?

Here is part of my next experimental cable - basically squeezing the ER4B circuit into the 3.5mm plug so it will be a clean looking cable. Haven't actually gotten the cable yet, but I just want to build the plug first to make sure there is enough room to fit everything. So far so good..
