If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

The smell didn't bother me quite frankly.
The cable is a bit too long when I was riding bike. But the length is actually good for me to plug into my amp for better listening at home.
There isn't a way to turn xr into sr via eq. It can match the frequency response but they will still sound different in terms of texture and vividness. They can sound close tho.
If you just want some more highs, I recommend to get a PtoS adapter for xr. That brings the highs much closer to that of sr, and that is one of my most enjoyable combination.

Does using the PtoS adapter reduces the bass of the XR too? Also what is the impedance of the adapter? Would using a 100ohm impedance adapter yields the same result as the PtoS adapter?

Ah, I might have to braid part of the cable then. It doesn't look long enough to be able to braid the whole thing below the Y though, which means it's not going to look great.
It's a problem here because of how packed the trains get (Japan). I have had much shorter cables ripped out of my ears getting caught on a bag like that.
I reduced the cable length on mine by about 30cm using this method: http://www.animatedknots.com/braid/index.php?Categ=decorative&LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg

I don't think so, check out the impedance on SR which I believe is pretty similar to XR:

The impedance curve starts rising at 2 kHz. Also, the effect with 140 Ohm resistor:

And If I'm not mistaken the PtoS has 75 Ohm resistor built-in. I think the DUNU's adapter like this would do the job too.

So can it work also with 100 ohm adapter?the reason is i found a local seller selling one with similar form factor as the P to S (with cable), but with 100 ohm. I am weary of the Dunu's as I'm afraid i might potentially break the connector if it's sticking out too far like that

with 100ohm the change is a little bit more than with 75ohm. and a tiny bit less than with 140ohm(captain obvious to the rescue). the only thing you may or may not have to worry about is if your DAP has enough voltage output to get you to your desired loudness. a few weak DAPs were sometimes a little short with the ER4S.

Thanks for the link. I just braided a third of the cable below the Y split, and it is perfect now.
I braided other wires before, but this method was much easier and gave me a much neater overall braid.

I found a Bluetooth receiver I bought a while ago and used it from my breast pocket with the small receiver.
It somehow sounded even better than from my phone...but not as good as from my PC.

Doing a bit of experiment with some cheap foams: this one is not a memory foam as it bounce back to shape too quickly, so i use a scissors to hack the diameter a bit so it can enter snuggly inside the ear canal (a bit of trial of snipping and inserting until i got the size right).

I'm quite happy with the results, as i can never get a perfect seal with the tri flange, and using the small westone silicone, i can get a perfect seal, but the vacuum inside the ear canal make the sound weird and the comfort is certainly better with this foam than with the silicone

small shure foams seem to work very well for pretty much every one.
comply too, they are even slightly more comfortable as they are softer. but these desintegrate way to fast and shure get softer after a while.

I ended up using another foam, pulling the silicone core out, and put it on the ER4XR. now i can use regular diameter eartips with them. I'm using a double flange that i have. now i can have the sound of the tri flange without the fit issue.

Sorry for quoting myself, here's the picture of the second experiment in case it can be beneficial for others..
With this mod i can try wider variety of different regular tips that i already have, and also can have fit my wide bore tips for shallower insertion.

I am on the prowl for the Comply Foam Tips, Small Size. The stock ones are nigh bearable, for my small ears. The triflanges, the small size, are a decent fit, although, I don't think they provide a good seal. The Comply's are too damn expensive for my broke ass student self, and I was hoping if there are knock-offs or a cheaper alternative to it?

The triple flanges should give excellent seal. Maybe you didn't insert them deep enough? As cheaper alternative for Complys I would suggest InAirs

It's not about the depth of insertion, but more of the shape of the canal. mine is a bit more angled on the left ear, so no matter how deep it can never get a seal the right one is fine, both with small or large tri flanges

try scouring the Aliexpress, they sell cheap 2mm foams like the ones i used. if you like to try, cut the last flange, it might fit better.

i settled for the double flange
