Hi everyone,

i am new to head fi.

I was wondering what would be the most suitable IEM for me. My budget is around 380 USD (which can be more or less). I listen to alot of Japanese female vocalists like Zard, Ikimono-gakari, Natsukawa Rimi, Kanako Wada, Seiko Matsuda, Momoe Yamaguchi, Akino Arai, YUI. I am looking for an IEM that will be suitable for my music tastes. I want it to sound smooth, Sweet, clear and detailed. The earphone must be able to reproduce the vocals well and bring out the emotion of the songs. I also want the treble to be smooth and there aren't any hissing or any harshness/high pitched sound. I currently have an Cowon J3 and is wanting an earphones that doesn't require an amp . Someone recommended the Ortofon e-q7 for me do you think it will be suitable for the songs i like. Any other suggestions will be greatful.

My wife (who is Japanese and generally listens to similar music) has been using both  ER4S and HF5's.  HF5's more so now, especially on the go, since they work well without amplification.  You could go ER4P, but the HF5's get pretty close.  ER4S's need *solid* amplification to make the magic happen, so unless you are willing to make that commitment, I would stick to the others.

I would recommend the .Ortofon e-q5/e-q7, Sony MDR-EX1000, or the Shure SE535.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Sorry about having three threads on the same topic. I am new here and was having trouble on deleting them. The e-q7 is a single driver. What is the difference between a single and triple drivers.

Thanks.

Single driver handles the treble, midrange, bass at the same time while dual/triple/quad drivers handles them separately with a crossover. Kind of like a mini version of a component set in car audio.

Thanks. What effect does a dual/triple/quad drivers  have on sound quality. Is using a single driver a bad thing?

It really depends on how they are tuned. More drivers doesn't always equal better sound. I just got the e-Q5 which is a single moving BA and it sounds fantastic. It's not great for bass heavy tracks but amazing for everything else.

Thanks again. Does your e-q5 sound great without an amp and is it loud enough. Because my Cowon J3 only has a max output of 16 ohm.

Thanks. Does your wife listen to any of the music that i like? Have you tried the HF5's yourself-is it good with vocals?
