Correct me if I'm wrong--but the Spring 3 DAC is 24 bit.
24bit doesn't exist in the real world. The spring will accept 32bit data, but there's no audio hardware with a noise floor low enough to benefit from 24bit data. The spring 3 measures with about 20bits of dynamic range, which is kind of the modern benchmark for NOS

In this case it's not about the bit depth of the ladder (which is indeed 24 bit) but the true linear range of the converter, which for spring 3/may is about 20 bit.

By correctly setting the bit depth in HQP, you can linearise the DAC and get measurably better performance. If you set the bit depth too high/just leave it at 24 you won't get the same effect.

As a practical demo of this here's the same thing but on the Hifiman EF400

Running either without HQP or with HQP but bit depth set too high (24 bit in this instance) and playing a low level (-120dB) test signal you see this, significant distortion, and also the signal itself is not actually the correct amplitude:

But if we set HQP's noise shaper to run within the linear range of the DAC we can demonstrably improve performance. Setting HQP to 15 bit for the EF400 we now get this:

The distortion is eliminated and the signal amplitude is accurate.

Hello everyone,
My Red is arriving today.
I've been using DietPi on a Raspberry Pi for some time now, and I'm thinking about whether I should also use DietPi for the Red.

What is the current situation with the Red OS?
Has the functionality improved, and what if I want to use HQPlayer?
As far as I understand it, do I have to activate the NAA protocol in the web interface?

What do you mean by this? Is this refering to the Dither settings also or just the Bits for the DAC?
It means that you'd need to set the following setting (HQP 5 on left, HQP 4 on right) to within the linear range of your DAC.

Generally you can get this by taking the SINAD and dividing by 6. Depending on architecture some DACs may be able to be set slightly higher.

Thank you! Regarding the DAC in Devialet Expert Pro (which is a T.I. PCM179X) is how can I calculate this?

hi, i talked to joseph @joseph69 and we went through the set up, but why does the thing circled in green alway appear in my setup and if i unmark it, it will not work

i powered the red off and removed the usb cable, and then back on and connected the usb cable

i am using the red as streamer connetced to my spring 3 dac via usb

I don't know.
i got my red today, and unfortunately i can't get the original Red OS to work at all, just like DietPi.
It only works with RopieXL.
I will now try Red OS again.
