HiFiMan Susvara

in terms of what would be considered a budget amp in this crazy hobby I think the ican pro does an excellent job with the susvara...I used to own it and enjoyed it....

Thanks! There are far pricier things out there than our big iCAN indeed :)

What do you mean analgoue outs have their own knobs?

Just next to analog outs there's a handy knob that i.e. sets their voltage. Please see the third page of this manual: https://ifi-audio.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Pro_iDSD_Manual.pdf

A pity that there's no active user with Susvaras and ICAN Pro (Signature) in this thread and can report.
Am specifically interested in the XBass feature which would be very interesting for Susvara Imho.
@iFi audio if you know any Susvara ICAN reviews I'd be thankful to get some links...

I think that I saw some comments in this thread bout Susvaras and Pro iCAN, but can't recall where exactly. I know, going through 700+ pages isn't an easy task :)

Thats the iDSD Pro not iCan

Good point, I was all about Pro iDSD in my recent posts :D

Now I have some fixing to do:

Does the gain settings on the front effect the preamp output?

Pro iCAN's gain switch also affects its rear outputs.

And why is the XLR inputs beneficial, real world? I have a Qutest, no balanced out.

Although Pro iCAN is a fully balanced design that sounds best when it's used as such, going into it via RCAs also is perfectly fine :)

@FooFighter

Susvara and iCan Pro is a good combo, but if you want to use the XBASS at its highest setting, as well as listening at loud levels, it may run into its protection circuits and shut down. This is even more likley if you are using the 3d feature as well as the XBASS at full.

Finally some good feedback.
Thx mate.
Only alternative could be to use Ican Pro as preamp if these settings are applied also to the rear output ports but then this would be some expensive preamp - a pity that their IDSD Pro (Signature) isn't offering such preamp toning functions as this would be a more interesting option if more serious power amping is needed in the chain afterwards anyway.
As far as I understood IDSD is offering the same amp modes like solid state and tube but only offering less amplification which won't matter as a preamp.
As a DAC is needed anyway this setup would reduce the length of the overall chain to 2 plus headphone instead of 3.

Hi I'm purchasing a Susvara in December (deposit already paid to our local audio dealer). I'm running an Audio GD R7HE on DAC duties and a Burson Soloist 3X Performance on amp duties. I also have a Little Dot MKVI+ OTL tube amp. Does anyone know if these amps will be able to bring out the best in the Susvara (or close to its best)?

Just to weigh in on power needs for the Susvara. I recently acquired an ifi Pro iESL for use as an energizer with the Audeze CRBN e-stats. One of the features of the iESL is that you can connect it to your speaker amplifier and pump full power into the balanced XLR headphone output on the IESL. I plugged in my Susvara to the iesl and did a lot of listening. No doubt, there is an increase in depth, bass, fullness, and overall image. But, you need to turn up the amp to loud listening levels to perceive these differences. I have a Burson Soloist 3XP and on high gain the Susvaras sound great with it. The Burson puts out 8 watts at 16 ohms XLR. The speaker amp I used with the iESL and the the Susvara is a Ragnarok 2/ 60 watts at 8 ohms. There was a difference, but at normal (for me) listening levels the difference is not night and day. I can finally stop worrying about whether or not I am under powering the Susvara. The Raganarok 2 speaker amp at full blast is not, for me, necessary to enjoy the Susvara...but it is fun to let it rip every now and then.

Soloist is good, very good,
but it is not enough for Susvara. It is a good start but with a really quality and proper power Susvara is transforming. Soloist is close but you can do so much better with Ferrum Oor or Benchmark AHB2. I will choose Oor every day but AHB2 is also a powerful and clean enough amp for Susvara so it is a matter of preferences.

I am using Burson Conductor 3XR which is similar to Soloist in amplification stage. It drives Susvara nicely with sufficient power and dynamics, much better than my Benchmark HPA4.

If you want to further explore Susvara's potential, I suggest you looking for Kinki Studio THR-1. It is an amazing amplifier with the smoothest and the most analogue sounding one, and the power is sufficient to drive anything on the Earth.

There is nothing wrong at all if you love the sound you're hearing--not at all suggesting that you need to change or upgrade. But I would just say that if you tried better and more capable speaker amps (not even specifically saying more expensive), the differences you hear at louder levels now are* likely to be discernible to you at any reasonable listening level.

I didn’t like the Ragnarok with the Susvara. Just didn’t do it for me. I don’t know if it’s very representative of what a proper speaker amp can do with a Sus.

For example, I wouldn’t drive a decent pair of floorstanders or even low efficiency bookshelves with a Ragnarok.

I know other Susvara owners who didn’t like the Rag.

The stage is particularly meh, on the Rag. The sound is soft as well, even for the Sus.

I agree, it was a bit of a disappointment on the Susvara. It did really well with every other headphone I threw at it though!
