I've used the Norne Zoetic and the Dana cables...both are significant upgrades over stock.

Reading a lot on this thread, it seems HEK beats out the HD800 classic.  Now that the HD800S has been out for a while, is the differential still significant.

I listen to mostly classic rock and pop/vocals.  Would the HEK still beat out the 800S easily.  Anyone prefer the LCD-3 for these genre types?

I listen to a great deal of classic rock and pop with vocals too, and my favorites for this are the LCD4, PS1000e, HE1000, and the Senn HD650. All have fine bass and can deal with digital shout in vocals.
If you get an LCD3 (fazored), try and get a mellower dac. In fact, try for a mellow dac with pop/rock regardless of your phone. Vocals can go over the top and become painful in digital in good old pop and rock.
And if you can deal with spinning discs at all, try to get an SACD player and try out SACDs of classic rock.

I am also interested in how the HE1000 compare with the HD800S.

I'll have my HEK at the NY Area Meet, I'm sure there will be an 800s...

Thoroughly enjoying this headphone. It brings a good sense of detail and realism to music.

Coming from closed headphones I really appreciate the open soundstage and imaging of these. They also show textures inside notes I haven't heard before. For example, electronic music like hardbass uses a lot of mid-bass sounds that often are more complex than than one might think. I am also very keen of the slightly laid back sound signature that makes these very pleasant to listen to.

I had mine for a couple months now and enjoying the awesome details that it pulls out of the music that I listen to.
I did applied the felt strip mod and it moved the vocals more forward which I liked better than the un-modded one.

The lay back signature of the HE1000 made me so addicted that I cant listen to any close back headphone anymore. I prefer most vocal track on the HE1000 instead of the TH-X00. Vocal and instrument separation is insane on these. Vocal is full with texture.

I can understand you liking the vocals more on the HE1000 as it's not as recessed as they feel on the TH-X00. If the HE1000 had the bass slam, quantity of the TH-X00 but kept the planar quality it would be my ultimate headphone.

I would prefer the ear pads be slightly thicker and plusher to prevent the hinge from making contact with my head. Also the width of the contacting area of the ear pad could be a tad bigger, compromising the huge area for ears but giving a more even surface contact with the head. A little more angle wouldn't hurt either. Has anyone found or made custom ear pads for the HEK?

Female vocals were one of the disappointments compared to the HE560 in my case :p

I guess that just goes to show that everybody has different tastes. For me, these cans are supreme for female vocals.

Agree.

I have not heard any other headphone which female vocal sounded better than the HE1000.

The HE560 does't even come close.

Have to say, it's hard to listen to the 560(for me) since I got the HEK...
