That looks to be about what I can see from the outside grille and underneath the earpad. The top and bottom of the drivers are not covered with the silver traces nor magnets. It looks like the sides aren't completely covered by the magnets either, which may affect the isodynamic field on the sides of the driver.

How are the earpads attached anyway?

Makes me feel like grabbing a washboard and finding me a jug band!!!!

Come on down to Kentucky Doc, washboard and jug bands are little more numerous here than NJ!

True, but I just saw the Jim Kweskin Jug Band about a week ago at The City Winery in Manhattan, (no jug at this point, cheat with a stand up bass...Geoff Muldaur, who plays guitar, did double on the washboard, though, with his ex-wife, Maria, on vocals, and John Sebastion guitar/banjo/harmonica). It was a great set...ain't nothing like good live music, been on a roll. Tonight, my town (Westfield), has a Tuesday night jazz fest part of the summer, 7-9PM, 5 bands playing different parts of town, if I get out of the office on time try to get to it (missed the others so far, looking so far tonight, hope I didn't just jinx myself :D ). Have had the good fortune to get to some great live music this summer. And, when I'm stuck indoors, have TIDAL playing the new Richard Thompson album, "Still", it's a goodun'

Jorma Kaukonen's "Blue Country Heart" is a real "knee slapping' time", and an unbelievably clean hi-rez recording….

I took delivery of a new Decware Taboo Mk3 today. Even right out of the box, with no burn in, with factory supplied tubes, and without being connected to the HE1000s via the balanced cables, it's a great match for the HE1000s. Highly, highly, recommended.

Pics please? I like me some tube amp porn - probably not the only one

So I finally bestired myself to convert the Silver Dragon cable for my HD 800 to a HE1000 cable. In short: It brought all the smoothness and sparkle I was looking for – along with further membrane break-in and more sophisticated equalization. Now the HE1000 sounds absolutely convincing to me in every respect: bass, midrange, treble, extension, clarity, transparency, soundstage, detail, dynamics/impulsivity, neutrality and particularly naturalness. From the headphones I've heard it's the one with the best, most careful reproduction of instrument timbres.

For those interested and in possession of a FiiO player or any other octave equalizer, here's my latest EQ curve (from 31 Hz to 16 kHz):

–1.4      –4.4      –3      –1.6      –2.6     –2.8      ––      –1.6      –5.2      –2.4        [EQ curve updated]

Initially I predominantly relied on Tyll's measurements, but that hasn't led to an ideal tonal balance. So after many trials and errors on my way to the ideal sound I found above curve to suit my sonic ideal best.

If you're trying these settings, give yourself some time for adaptating to the new sonic balance! And after that you may feel the need to adjust it to your liking (or your individual HRTF, resp.).

I have been given some advice to use a beefy/TOTL amp for driving the HE1000. What I can say is that the quality of the amp will certainly be reflected by the headphone's high resolution. But at the same time if your DAC can drive it directly, with low enough output impedance and high enough output power, any amp in the signal path – as good as it may be – will audibly degrade the signal.* I tried to use my Chord Hugo as a mere DAC, feeding three of my amps. The EAR++ III (Black-Gates modded) sounded very pleasing at first, mighty and smooth, but after a few seconds it became too clear that it makes the sound slow, thick, round and intransparent – almost a caricature of euphony compared to the Hugo driving the HE1000 directly. The Corda Concerto was better in terms of accuracy, but failed to create a natural sound, still made transients slower and sacrificed clarity. The best of my amps was the Corda Symphony: Although transparency was reduced and transients were rounded, it sounded passably neutral and detailed. But still far from the Hugo's headphone out, which was a class of its own, in every tonal aspect – dynamics and bass punch included.

This just as a hint for those who try to equalize the HE1000's tonal traits by means of synergetic electronics. For me the Hugo/HE1000 pairing (plus a matching EQ curve) provides a sound as close to my sonic ideal as it gets (from what I know and have auditioned).

* The kind of signal degradation introduced by amplifiers doesn't necessarily sound bad; according to my experience it will make the sound more forgiving in view of the headphone's inaccuracies, particularly frequency-response issues and resonances. Even harmonic distortion can be masked by the smoothing effect of amplifier sound. And primarily the sound may become bigger and fuller.

Although certainly many HE1000 owners would call themselves perfectionists, I'm possibly the only one caring for an optimized frequency response (roughly on the basis of Tyll's measurements). Whereas most seem to content themselves with the «factory settings» of their gear.

I found that upgrading to the Whiplash TWau modular cable a very meaningful boost. It was/is well worth it to me. Everyday I get excellent sound. Excellent in all areas of reproduced sound. IMO

Well this is sad. My first he-1000 arrived dirty and rattles when i played deep and low bass notes. I thought that was more than enough reason to return it so i did. The second pair arrived dirty, had loose sockets, rattled in the bass, and had that nasty, nasty crumpling sound when you slap them together. This is a shame, i fell in love with its sound. Oh and the headband became shorter, now i am unable to make it fit on my head nicely. Its like the issues that plague audeze's LCD headphones, but they ARRIVE with issues, not develop them in a few months. Good job, HIFIMAN!

Mmm.....Amen, brother. Just got today my Whiplash modular set (silver) for the HE1K. Impressive results as well. Will be testing the he1k with the Mass Kobo 404 (which also arrived today).

Have been enjoying my HEK with the Norne Zoetic cable, terminated balanced (waiting on a LC), now using adapters for single ended (for ZOTL, RS HR-2, and preamp headphone amp), and a balanced Pono adapter. Man, sounds stupid-good...the balanced Pono combination actually works and sounds great!

I have my equipment in one room and my listening environment/chair in another. It's a good 40 foot run.

I already have high quality (Audioquest) RCA run in an under floor conduit from the equipment room to my chair.

My problem is that I now have a Decware Taboo Mk3 headphone amp that uses four pin balanced connectors out to my new balanced Hk1000 and balanced Sennheiser 800s

Anyone here know where I could find someone who already has, or could make both a:

  • Four pin male headphone (which would plug into my headphone amp) at one end and dual female RCA at the other end (which would connect to my conduit run), and
  • Four pin female headphone (which my headphones would plug into) at one end and dual female RCA at the other end.

Thanks.

I have tried my HE1000 with the stock cable, Wywires Red, Zeus OCC Copper, WireWorld Nano Platinum and DHC Complement 4. All the aftermarket are great but IMO the best is the Complement 4 followed by the WireWorld and then the Zeus.
