I've been playing around with EQ for the HE1000 Stealth and I think I found a pretty simple EQ that I really enjoy. It adds a decent amount of low end without getting boomy, adds some thickness to male vocals that can sometimes sound thin, and retains the soundstage/clarity/sparkly highs that make the HE1000 series special. Let me know what you think if you try it out:

Preamp: -3.5 dB
Filter 1: ON PK Fc 32 Hz Gain 3.4 dB Q 1.41
Filter 2: ON PK Fc 64 Hz Gain 3.4 dB Q 1.41
Filter 3: ON PK Fc 125 Hz Gain 2 dB Q 1.41
Filter 4: ON PK Fc 250 Hz Gain 0 dB Q 1.41
Filter 5: ON PK Fc 500 Hz Gain 1 dB Q 1.41
I love the sound without eq but I want to try your settings

I’ll have to try that and add that eq to Roon when I get the chance

Thanks a lot, gonna give that a try at some point 😊

For the HEK Stealth, which one would you choose and why?
1. Schiit Audio Valhalla 2
2. Topping A70 Pro
3. Something else in the 500 euro/USD range (or below), let me know what and why.
I would highly recommend the A70 Pro for the price. I cannot tell it apart from my mono-block speaker amps, which I personally think blew away the Ferum stack. It's very clear, neutral, spacious, and inoffensive for the price. Much improved over the A90, for sure.

I've found they don't need too much EQ, but a nice bass shelf helps with certain music. A peak filter at ~1.9k with a Q of 3 can improve vocal forwardness, but be sure you place it correctly or you will inadvertently increase the 3k range, making it sound more shouty.

i honestly would go with the hifiman EF 400! It drives my Arya stealth and 1000 stealth perfectly. And hifiman always keeps dropping the price on it. And it’s a dac and amp so don’t have to worry about a combo and also has USB if you wanna drive it to your laptop our even tablet

Have you compared the two? I have heard several bad reports regarding the EF400.

If you want a slightly warmer amp like the EF400, maybe consider the Asgard 3. It has a 5 year warranty and doesn't have the HiFiMan QC issues. It leaves you with $250 leftover to get a DAC too, or you could get the internal ES9028 card for another $100. I've been using it with my HE1000 Stealth and have been really enjoying it, it gets plenty loud on high-gain at 9 o'clock.

Two new additions in the analog domain have really brought out the soundstaging in my V2s: a Technics SL1200G and a Schiit Lokius. All I can say is wow! Was listening to John Martyn’s Solid Air and I felt that some sounds were coming from way outside the headphones. Almost like a speaker experience. A little bass boost and taming of 6K and 16k with the Lokius really brought out a nice warm sound.

Solid Air pressing is great, the half speed mastered edition from Abbey Road studios.

I guess this experience speaks to the importance of source. There may be some digital systems out there that rival this, but mine doesn’t (although my dac is a fraction of the cost of the Technics).

I came very close to ordering the A70, but it has also had some start up issues with going into protection mode. So I was a bit reluctant. Then a good deal on a Violectric V200 showed up, and I should receive this today :)
I have a long list of amps I want to give a try, but for now the V200 will do. Next I should be looking at a DAC... The endless hunt 🤣

Are you referring to the fellow on ASR who had an issue with their amp?

It sounded like an infant mortality issue, so it might have broke in shipping. I've had mine on for a month straight, and have had zero issues. I'd still recommend you try AB'ing it, most places offer free returns (headphones.com even has a year long return policy).

Too much bass for me.

For my tastes (audiophile, not bass head, flattish overall but do not adhere strictly to Harman), PEQ:

Hz -- db - Q -- Type
065 +1.8 0.9 Bass Shelf 2
200 -1.8 3.0 Analog Bell
1.8k -3.0 3.4 -- " -- "
3.2k -1.2 5.0 -- " -- "
6.4k -3.6 6.2 -- " -- "
14.k -3.4 7.0 -- " -- "

Haven't set it up, but based on listening tests and HFM can experience that's where I'd start.

There have been quite a few cases of this, also seen some here in Head-Fi as well. But the last message from their main supplier here in Europe is that they have fixed the issue with the latest production batch.
I really wish I could buy from Headphones.com, as I would like to support them because of all their great content. But as I live in Europe, I need to buy somewhere else :)

First evening in the company of the Hifiman HE1000 Stealth:

How many shades can a bass have?
How do you play a guitar?
How important is control and precision?
And what is depth?

Listen to Eric Clapton in "Change the World" and everything will be revealed to you...

Last night I was reading a review explaining why the name Stealth was chosen for this headphone, to be honest I didn't understand it. According to the reviewer the name comes from military fighters that hide from radar and like those fighters this headphone hides from the listener. But it doesn't just hide itself... it hides everything. There's no headphones, there's no amplifier, there's no DAC. Everything is hidden... what remains? Only one thing stays with you... the music. Now everything is clearer to me.
