Sure, or you could listen to one first

True. The lcd 2's and for sure on par with the 009's. YMMV
The jump in sound quality do not match the jump in price after HE-560. The difference is subtle and very personal that it may not be worth the upgrade for some. But you can't always assume anything unless you listen to it. Even the HE-6 compared to HE-560 certainly sound different. But it's up to that person whether the difference in sound is worth the difference in price.
The change is definitely more noticeable than, say, switching from AK240 to AK380. And there are even better phones out there. For example, I think that as good as the HE1000 is, it still can't touch the SR009 in terms of clarity and transparency. Some may enjoy the HE1000 more (mostly due to bass quantity), but to me, the SR009 is still the technically superior headphone to HE1000 (or any planar magnetic headphone for that matter).
SR009 may not sound as versatile as the planars (which sometimes sound good anyway even with mediocre source and amp) and would take some time for you to find the best front ends to match with it to your liking, but once you have achieved that, no planar magnetic headphones, HE1000 included, can even come close to it.
Can't compare it to the HE-6, have both the 560 and the beta HEk...really like/liked my 560, now it sounds muddy after getting the HEk, hardly ever put it on (do find it more comfortable than the HEk, ymmv of course).
