Hifiman HE-500 or Sennheiser HD 650

Nooo! It may be old but its still a world class headphone. It's actually a fast headphone when it is amped sufficiently. Give them a good powerful tube amp and they can be surprisingly sharp and detailed. The orthos are better but for the price comparison they should be.

+1

the hd 650s deserve more credit around here. sure the he-500 might be better now, but the hd 650 isn't too far behind, it scales very well, and pairs excellently with amps such as the WA6-SE. when i had my hd 650s with that combo, they where on a completely different level. the veil was gone and the soundstage improved. dynamics where greatly increases and the headphones sounded faster and more detailed. its a huge difference.

Dubstep Girl What you think which are better for your opinion He-500 or LCD 2 Rev 2?

i have yet to hear the HE-500, which is why i will not comment on its sound.

i do enjoy my LCD-2 alot and find that they have a very similar sound to the HD-650 (of course, the LCD-2 are better in almost every way and not as colored as the 650s). IMO, the LCD-2 will appeal more to people who are used to the HD-650 sound and looking for an upgrade. I have no idea how the HE-500 and LCD-2 compare. i'm guessing they're about the same with the HE-500 being less dark and having a better soundstage.

Though they are all fairly distinct headphones on their own, I'd say the HE-500 is clearly more like the HD650.  Vocals and bass are really what stand out the most as similarities. LCD-2's vocals feel more distant than both of these headphones, while the instruments feel more forward than the HD650 and HE-500.  The HD650 and HE-500 both have a similar bass impact, with the HD650 having a slightly stronger bass impact, and the HE-500 having a more refined and deeper extending bass.  Along with this, the soundstage of the HD650 is closer to that of the HE-500 (Which has a wider soundstage) than the LCD-2 (Which has a narrower soundstage).

Regardless, I was used to the HD650 and was not a fan of the LCD-2... however, that is all highly based on personal preference.

EDIT: Just realized you never said one was closer to the HD650 than the other, so I have nothing to disagree about

I can see both the LCD2 and HE500's as natural upgrade options if you like the 650's, but I would also agree that the HE500's are more like the 650's in terms of balance and soundstage. Some maybe disappointed with the LCD2's lack of sparkle in the treble if wanting more than what the 650's have.

If you want some of the sweetest highs on the market then, the HE-500s are your headphone.  If you want some of the lowest extending bass on the market, then the LCD-2.2s are you headphone.

I maybe killed for this but I will say it again and some will agree, the HD650's scale extremely well with certain high-end amp's, more so being more neutral than the HE-500's.

^^ This is true about the neutrality of hd650, but most aren't looking for a truly neutral hp. I like a little coloration added to the hp and the 650 does that perfectly.

Yep,  the color in the mid regions of the HD650 is what I love about it.  The AD2K is probably one of the only headphones I own that can rival the HD650s in this area.

For me, the coloration is really the key for enjoyment of the hp. It either fits you or it doesn't. I used to really enjoy a bassier presentation, ie d2k. Now the hd650 has plenty of bass for me. Funny how your preferences change over time with this hobby.
