Hifiman he-400i Impressions and Discussion

I am planning to buy the Sennheiser HD700 to replace my Hifiman HE400i.

I really like the sound of Hifiman HE400i, but they are not the most comfortable. Hifiman gets really uncomfortable after an hour of use.

I like fast sound more than laid back warm sound, I don't have an opportunity listen to the headphone before I buy them.
My amp is Audio-gd nfb11.

Will it be a disappointment in terms of sound if I buy the Sennheiser HD700 (compared to HE400i)?

Please share your thoughts.

I actually just replied to you for this same exact question over in the HD700 thread, but I'll post it again here:

I don't have the NFB-11, but I do own the 400i and the HD700.

The HD700 is definitely more comfortable than the HD700. In fact, the HD700 is probably among the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn.

Not entirely sure what you mean by "fast sound", but I don't think the HD700 sounds much "faster" than the 400i, in terms of transients and being able to keep up with quick music.

If you really like the sound of the 400i, then you may or may not like the sound of the HD700. I think in terms of bass they both are pretty equal in quantity (with perhaps the 400i being slightly better in quality) but the HD700 has some treble spikes that the 400i does not. So if you think the 400i is about as bright of a headphone you want to listen to, you may not like the HD700.

Soundstage and layering (depth perception, or being able to distinguish if sounds are closer or further away from you) are definitely better on the HD700.

Hope that helps!

Yes, it was very good.

Thanks! I've been offered one at a good price so I will probably make a balanced desktop system with the HPA-3B as amp and the Advance Acoustic mda-503 or Cambridge Dacmagic+ as DAC (depending on which one matches best with the HPA-3B) fed by one of the Shinrico digital players....

Yeah, at one point I was trying to decide between building an optimized HE400i setup or changing headphones. I ended up building my system around the HD800, but if I was going to optimize around the HE400i the HPA3B was in the running for the amp I was going to use.

Sounds good. I've already got a couple of great SE setups but lately I've been getting more and more portable/semi portable gear with balanced output which have made me looking at a balanced stationary system as well.

Does the madness ever end lol.......

Edit: I totally loved the HPA-1 when I had it but it had to be sold to help financing the purchase of the Burson Conductor V2+.

If you've got the budget, Modi Multibit + Jotunheim-Balanced to 400i is mind blowing.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not interested in any more dac's at the moment (and tbh I'd be surprised if the Modi would outperform my current top dac's). The Jotunheim is very interesting but it'll cost me more than the double compared to the Matrix unit and I'm not sure I can justify that with the other gear I've got already (tbh I'd expect any of my options for balanced amp to be inferior to the Burson V2+).

I think the Jotunheim, HPA-3B AND NFB-1AMP are my options but I'm leaning towards the Matrix due to the great price and my excellent experience with the HPA-1.......

Hello, I was originally very set on buying the HD650s/HD6xx's if I could. However, this sale on Amazon caught my eye. If I like the sound signature of the 650s, how do these compare?
I listen to nujabes, dj okawari, mainstream stuff like pop, and a little bit of kpop/hip hop.
Also, would a V-Moda BoomPro mic work with this?

These require a 2.5mm cord going to each ear separately. The BoomPro, if I am not mistaken, is a 3.5mm meant to go into one side. If that is the case, it won't work with the 400i.

Have you tried the Audio-GD amps, or anything else with the 400i and multibit dac??

The Asgard 1-2, Bifrost 4490, Lyr 2 and the iDSD were all floor wiped by the Mimby/Jot.

No, it won't work. Have you checked out the Antlion Mod Mic?
