No problem, only thing that matters is that they sound good to youMaybe I should review the terminology again. In any case, my Lcd2's were among the first production. To my ears, the HE400i's have some of the same characteristics as my "old" Lcd2's. Not exactly, but similar enough that I like them very much.
I will try to get my terminology right next time, my being new to head-fi forum/audiophile lingo

l struggle with audiophile terminology quite a bit when I try to describe sounds. Someone needs to produce a list of audiophile adjectives that we can just pick from to help us newbies out with sound descriptions, lol.Maybe I should review the terminology again. I wonder whether they will be closer to the original HE400, the HE400i or the HE400S. From the photos, it seems that they have the headband of the HE400. Most reviewers who have tried both report that the newer headband used in the 400i and 400S is more comfortable. I took advantage of a recent sale at A.C. Gears (see post https://head-fi.org/threads/the-dea...the-first-post.692119/page-1597#post-13562143) and ended up paying $142 for the 400i. Here is how. I had ordered the 400S, but the vendor called me and proposed a no-cost upgrade to the 400i, because they had sold out the 400S model. It took me one day to accept the offer, and I had to wait a while (original order: June 23, 2017; delivery: July 18, 2017; full disclosure: I asked the shipping company to delay delivery from July 14 to July 18) for the headphones to be delivered, but I am glad I did. I am enjoying the 400i very much.Massdrop have just announced a collaboration with Hifiman, the Massdrop x HIFIMAN HE4XX Planar Magnetic Headphones https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-hifiman-he4xx-planar-magnetic-headphones
After doing a bunch of mods (sorbothane, semi-open grill, Focus-A pads, dynamat) to my HE400, to me it sounds better than my HE400i. Also modified the headband for the HE400 so the comfort is quite good.
The 4XX seems like its on the lighter side so I'm thinking the cups are not metal like the old HE400/500/6 which made using soborthane in the cups worth while. At $169 I think I'll just get one to see what it sounds like, try some mods if they are missing something, if its good then I'll keep it around for a while, if not, I'll just give them away to one of the girls who likes the sound of them. Its why I also got in on the HD6XX drop so I can do some of the non-reversible mods to them.

400 has no mids at all, how can this be good?
Looking at the photos of the HE4XX, the headband looks remarkably similar to the original HE400, not at all like the HE400i. On that basis would it be reasonable to assume they are based on the 400 ? Or, would MassDrop/HiFiMan really change the headband in this way ?
Mids are almost back from the dead, maybe one foot in still in the grave. If you go to the HE400 thread there are a few others who have found various ways to get the mids back, most with some semi-open grills. I used a 1-1/4 square of hard rubber in the middle of the grills to bring back the mids but they are not HD650 mids.Mids are back from the dead you mean?
To me they are not close to the HE560, FYI both my HE400i and HE560 are the older versions with the SMC connectors and my HE400i has been modded with sorbothane in the cups and on the back plate, and it has the grill mod. The most notable difference is the bass/treble extension of the HE560 and the better imaging/sound stage. Only thing is the HE560 is a little picky with amps, much more so than the HE400i@DavidA Very useful thanks never knew that thread was their.
