**Hifiman HE-400 Impressions and Discussion Thread**

Hifi Man Velour pads and apparently the Beyerdynamic DT880 pads.

I find the Hifi Man pads to be on the hard side, if I hadn't already bought the Hifi Man velour pads, I would have gone for the DT880 version.

What is the diameter of the driver housing of the HE-400? Is it closer to 100 mm or 110mm because if it's the latter, then there won't be much choices in the market.

Got wood?  It looks like some wooden cups (Magno wood) are now available for the HifiMan @ $85.00 a pair.  Plus, a link to some stain samples on how they could be finished off.  The question is ... will the wooden cup option bring Matt back to the HE-400 for a custom HifiMan?

I'm sure those wood cups will look nice, but hardwood can shrink and crack. The seller sounds like he's trying to minimize shrinkage issues, but there's always a chance. The force of the jacks on the wood can be a problem--Audeze redesigned their jacks to deal with this issue. If I were going to install these, I'd find a buddy to split an extra pair, so a backup cup was available.

I'm very interested. Wonder if its lighter or heavier than the plastic. I also have audeze style (4 pin) connectors so I'd have to drill out the holes a little more

I have to say these hifiman have a lot of mod options these days from pads, cups, headbands/straps, all the way to paint jobs. A lot of creative folks around here.

I would say that there would possibly be a very slight variation in the sound but in all likelihood it would not be enough to be appreciable.

Do they just fit right on or do you have to mod them?

Not sure, sorry. There's a few posts on using the BD pads in this thread - maybe worth a search.

Again, not sure. I hate removing and re-attaching the pads on the HE-400 so I don't want to measure it, but I'm sure those kind of specs are around if you look.

Well, I got my HE-400's.  It's bittersweet.  For the positive, they are far and away the best sounding anything I've ever heard.  Definitely had that "wow" moment and heard tons of stuff in songs I didn't know existed.  Prior headphones include Alessandro MS-1, Sennheiser HD 555 modded, and AT ATH-A900x.   For the negative, I'm coming from closed headphones and after plugging them their openness disturbs my family in their home office.  So one hour on them and I may have to sell or switch them out for a closed set.  Wish I could just put a big glass bowl on my head and keep them.  How do the Mad Dogs stack up to the HE-400 in terms of sound character and sound leakage?
