**Hifiman HE-400 Impressions and Discussion Thread**

I'll probably give HiFiMan a call tomorrow. The grills are easy to take off right?

As for the sound, still adjusting to the signature after spending a lot of time with the AD700 recently and trying a little of everything from jazz, piano, rock, and pop. Right off the bat I would say they are very pleasant to listen to (and I mean that in the best way possible). I'm also finding them VERY comfortable. My AD700 had gotten very uncomfortable. Itchy, slid around around my head, too much material on my jaw, ears touched the diaphragms, etc. and I almost don't even feel the 400 on my head right now (I stretched out the headband a little). Trying the leather pads now and may switch on the velours tonight.

Currently running them out of the old Meier Headfive.

I get it. The AD700 was an absolute nightmare in comfort for me, for basically the same exact reasons you mentioned.

The grills are relatively easy to take off, just take care in not breaking the plastic rings which aren't that hard to snap off a teeth.

I responded to the other comment before I saw this. Now I'm up in the air again haha. I'm not waiting to pull the trigger on anything though. With the Magni and Modi being so nicely priced I might just do both of them when the time comes.

That's what I'm planning on when i get the extra $200 to spend ^_^

Quick question:

Would the Magni alone be better for me then my E10? Or should I just save up to get both at once?

For those who may not have noticed, the Battle of the Flagships thread got updated with the HE-400 review included now. It gets praised quite well and scores a very impressive 24th place, this despite not even being a flagship headphone. You can read the review here

Makes me proud to own this headphone :)

Now that I have read David's review, I'm thinking of getting them. I have been going back and forth between the 400 and the 500, but I think from what I can tell the 400s might be the better fit for me.

Could I ask those of you that have had or listened to a D5000 - I have a modded D2000 but I think probably sounds more like a D5000. I really like it, but I think it lacks clarity/transient response from what a planar could bring. Would you all think the HE400 is step change for me - and will give me that 'wow factror' from what I currently have? I'll also probably get a DAC/amp combo from Schiit at the same time.

I think you should just go for the HE-400. It's great value plus if you don't like it there are many places where you can buy from with a good return policy.

I can't say for the D5000, but the bass impact of the HE-400 sometimes doesn't make me miss the Denon D2000.  The clarity, well, there's no comparison.

When I got the D2000's the bass was there but not that defined - but the wood cips with light damping from Lawton and leather earcups helped that alot. I'm not a basshead, but do love a well articulated bass. Muddy, or too much emphasis around 500hz I'm not a fan of.

Yeah. Probably give headphones.com the business. I have a feeling I wont need to retrun them, but you never know until your hear'm yourself...

Is anyone using or has tried the Cambridge Audio Dacmagic Plus with the HE-400? I'm going to test it on Thursday and bringing it back home if it sounds good, but I'm mainly interested in if there are any others with experience on the combo.

I used to want more bass from the HE-400. I must have adjusted, because these damn headphones have a enough bass for me and THEN some.

I kinda really wanna try the HE-500 now... not that I'd buy them, but I'm curious.

Just ask to do a trade with someone. I traded a few months ago to audition the he500. While the he500 was technically superior, I found that I enjoyed the he400 more. Saved $700!!
