I know user wje from over the other threads has owned or still owns HE300 / 400 / 500, best you PM him eh.

I linked to some very good objective measurements and comparison between Hifiman pleather vs velours on HE400s by purrin over the big HE400 thread just yesterday.

Actually, I only owned the HE-300s for about 3 days.  I figured that if I were to own HifiMANs, it would be the orthos - the HE-400 and HE-500.  I didn't feel that having the HE-500 sit on my shelf, while using the HE-300s for listening was a very good move to make.  So, the HE-300s were sold locally.

I wish I could offer more advice.  The sound of the HE-300s is good, but if you're used to the ortho sound, it's a bit harder to adjust to what the HE-300 offers regarding output.

Heh yeah I do recall you getting rid of the 300's very fast after receiving them, still you have heard them nonetheless.

Also, it (HE300) is not hard to drive at all right? I mean, it is a dynamic driver phones.

They do have rather lowish sensitivity actually (93dB/mW). I was able to run them off of an iPod, but I had to turn the volume up pretty high, ~75% maybe more to reach something like my normal listening volume (and I don't listen super loud). They did better with an amp.

This thread needs a bump, I've been listening to them more and more, switching from LCD-2s, and the mid-range is pretty much planar magnetic level, superb for the price.

My experience with HE300 diverges from yours; had it for a while and did A/B comparisons between it and HE400s, and the latter absolutely smashed the former in all objective aspects of midrange.

A stereotype about planars is that the mids are characteristically smooth and lush (probably stems from the LCD-2 and HE-500 owners). In that sense, yes, the HE-300s were very rich and lush. Maybe he had meant tonality instead of technical proficiency?

Thread revival!

I just got these headphones and have been really enjoying them so far although they have less bass than I was expecting. I think I have something like 20 hours on them, will the bass develop more with further burn-in?

Thread revival indeed. Just got Rev. 3 in with the cardboard box and travel case. First Impressions: Holy damn, these are a ******* steal for $249. Will report back after listening to them for a few hours.

Whats the audio differences between revision 3 and 2? I can get the revision 2 on amazon (used) for $235 and the revision 3 (new) for $250 both including shipping.

Rev.3 comes in a cardboard box with the silver cable and new pads.

so the accessories are the only difference?  a box and a cable?  thats hardly a revision in my eyes.  no other changes to the drivers or anything?

Hi Jerg, I think you are correct that many judge the HE-300 as a planar magnetic. With a dynamic driver and at a much lower price point, it cannot match the detail of the HE-400. However at $249, we believe the HE-300 is more than competitive and should be compared with other headphones in that class.
