Hiby R6 Pro - serious upgrade to popular DAP

How would you describe the differences in SQ between the R6 Pro and R8?

Early days - got about 100 hours or so on the R8. Overall, it feels like a more mature, slightly leaner, more articulate R6 Pro - albeit with a little less warmth but bigger stage and more taut bass.

I would describe it as a refined, almost "grown up" sound relative to its sibling.

I'm having trouble moving .m3u playlist files from the R6 pro. I see the files on the player, but they don't show up in Windows File Explorer when I connect the player to my laptop. I'm trying to move them to a different player that has a copied SD card. Any ideas? Sorry, seems like a noob question, but I've spent about an hour and can't figure it out. Thanks!

Edit: I should mention these are playlists created in UAPP.
Are you using the R6 Pro in file transfer mode? It should mount and you should be able to browse the internal file system on Windows.
You can then find the custom playlists at:
Code:
\\Internal shared storage\HibyMusic\Playlist\Re\

Unfortunately, the default "Favorites" playlist is not listed. I requested a feature update to @Joe Bloggs on Telegram. Any update on that, Joe?

p.s. I just realized I'm posting in the wrong thread (I have a R6, not R6 Pro), but that shouldn't matter...

I also downloaded and installed new update. However when I tried to get into Hiby music it froze on settings symbol and message: 18 months of research to get to a more stable version! Tried just restarting but still ended up on same frozen message. Was able to get into Hiby music by going into files and clicking on an album and then restarting. Slightly scary and not impressed.
Just downloaded and installed the new update. No issues (so far)

Hello everyone
New here so please go gently with me :)

@Joe Bloggs and the rest of the community - I have a Hiby R6 Pro that I recently upgraded to the new 1.92G_20201031_1749 European firmware using the OTA upgrade and for some reason whenever I stream MQA music in latest Tidal app it is streaming the track at 352.8K which shows up in the top taskbar of the player and the light on the power button is glowing yellow.

If my understanding is correct this means the player is not decoding MQA music correctly?

The same track decodes on my SMSL M500 via my PC in Audirvana as MQA Green 44.1kHz

A Different track decodes on my SMSL M500 via my PC in Audirvana as FLAC 44.1kHz and on the R6 shows correctly in the taskbar as 44.1k EXCEPT the power button glows blue?????

I have factory reset the player but nothing changed.

Am I doing something wrong? I thought the player would decode MQA tracks at the bitrate that Tidal and the studio encoded the track and would also change the colour of the power button to blue or green or purple as governed by MQA?

Isn't yellow DSD decoding?

Thanks in advance

I believe that is normal for 8x MQA decoding. DSD LED is white, yellow is > 192kHz.

Quoting from an earlier post:

"The lighting scheme for the LED for different sample rates are supposed to be:

Not playing: pale blue

32-48kHz: blue

88.2kHz-192kHz: green

352.8-384kHz: orange-yellow

DSD: white"

Im not sure this is right though.

The track I am testing with is a MQA 44.1kHz track that shows up in Audirvana as MQA Green 44.1kHz using my M500 on my PC.

So why is the R6 trying to up sample it and outputting it as 352.8K???

Surely if the source track is MQA 44.1k the R6 should play it back as 44.1k and show Blue on the power button.

Playback of another file that is Flac 44.1k decodes correctly on the DAP and shows in the toolbar as 44.1k and the light turns Blue.

It seems as if the player is up sampling all MQA tracks and outputting them as 352.8k

Added some screenshots that shows issue

1st screenshot is the MQA track playing on PC through the SMSL M500

2nd Screenshot is the DAP with the same track using Tidal with Tidal Master account and shows 352.8k in top toolbar

It gets even stranger!!! When I unplug the headphones the bitrate drops and reports in the top toolbar as 88.2k

Very strange indeed. This was not happening before the Firmware update.

Again, the latest Hiby firmware supports 8x MQA unfolding, so 352.8 is 8 * 44.1 Khz. When the headphone is not plugged in the renderer is not operating so the bitrate only shows the MQA core decode. Agreed that this is confusing. Perhaps this will help:

Thanks for your feedback @rlw6534 Much appreciated.

After reading this my take is this would suggest that the Hiby R6 Pro does not have a "Full decoder" built into it and is software rendering from the MQA "Core Decoder" hence the 352.8 output and no MQA colour coding on the power button. As per MQA standards, Hiby are not allowed to say it has been fully decoded end to end and display the stream Authentication colour on the power button when it is rendered decoding.
So in other words not the highest quality MQA as a full decoder is required for that to display end to end MQA decode with stream Authentication indicated by the MQA colours of the streams and thus is using MQA Renderers to provide analog output only through the DACS managed D/A conversion.

That makes sense. I am somewhat unclear on the difference between a full decoder and a renderer as it relates to final sound quality.

Maybe @Joe Bloggs or another community member can answer this???

Are we right in thinking the R6 pro is not capable of taking advantage of the "Full decoding" process of a MQA stream and can only take advantage of "Rendered Decoding"?

If so what are the audio quality differences between a "Full Decoder" MQA processed stream and a "MQA Renderer" MQA processed stream?

Wishing everyone a very nice evening and holiday season. Thought I would jump on and see if I can either get some help, or get some advice on where I can go to further research. I cannot get my R6Pro to stay connected to my Lenovo Yoga C940 laptop and I was thinking there may a "known" process/issue someone can help with. I've listed the equipment / software details and results below:

EQUIPMENT
R6Pro - Android v8.1 | Firmware v1.92G_202001031_1749 | Build# 1.92G
Lenovo Yoga C940 Laptop - Windows 10 Home v1909

1. I've pared the two multiple times thinking if I simply deleted the device from each unit and re-paired, I would ultimately solve the issue. Unfortunately, the issue persists.
2. In the Bluetooth and other devices Windows system menu, the R6Pro appears under the category "Other Devices" with a telephone for an icon.
3. The R6 asks that after pairing, you restart the bluetooth service then activate "Bluetooth Audio Input." Each time I turn off BT, then on again, and try to activate, the screen with the blue circular log appears and indicates it's waiting for pairing. I suspect this is because I cannot keep both pieces of equipment connected.
4. Each time I turn-on BT on the R6, I select the Lenovo laptop, it appears to connect for a moment, but then fails. In the Bluetooth device setting screen in Windows, you can see the R6 connect for just a moment, then return back to the simple "Paired" status.
5. Interesting Note - When I access the settings for the Lenovo laptop on the R6, the screen where you can modify the devices name, there are three options just below - "Phone calls," Media Audio," and "Contact sharing" but it wont allow me to select Media Audio as an option, yet allows me to select the other two options. This too could be the result of a lack of connectivity, just wanted to mention this in case it's helpful information.

Again, hoping someone has experienced this or knows of a solution. At the very least, if someone can provide me with the best support email from Hiby, I can ask them as well.

Thanks again,

Lynn

I would love to try this new R6Pro firmware folks are posting about ( Firmware v1.92G_202001031_1749, I believe).

My R6 Pro is currently on 1.86G and I had last updated it to that version using a forum posted zip file from @Joe Bloggs. I used the file update method instead of the wireless update method because I had been getting an error each time I tried a wireless update. I still get that same error. It says:

Network Connection Failed (Java.Security.CertPathValidatorException Trust anchor for certification path not found).

From what I've found online, this error means there is something missing on Hiby's update server and that it isn't an issue with my R6 Pro

Is anyone else experiencing this error? Does anyone know how to fix it?

*B

@Joe Bloggs : Maybe you can pass on this error listing to the Hiby Developers to help solve the Trust anchor problem?
