Hi

I was looking to buy a pair of headphones as an xmas gift for someone who will be using them for house/pop/rock music. The budget is around 50 dollars. Ideally it would be something portable, and closed style, and comfortable for long hours of wear. I was looking at the DT 235 and sennheiser hd428 (although not sure if they are too portable). Any suggestions? Thank you.

The Koss porta pro look good, but it says they are open ear phone (which might not work for library use and blocking out noise). The Grado sr60i are out of my price range. Something like the Koss porta pro but over the ear/closed would be perfect.

Thanks for the reply. I have owned shure e2c (iem) and ath 700 (over ear headphones), and prefer the sound and quality of over ear headphones, especially the bass.

Cliff notes:
- portable
- closed/over ear
- $50-60

This is the wrong forum if you're looking for portable headphones. You might get more replies there.

There isn't a very large range to choose from at that price besides the Koss. You might consider some of the budget offerings from Audio Technica like the SQ5 or those white Sennheisers I see around.

If you don't mind a used one then I recommend this headphone ignore the brand as it uses the same driver as the denon 1001.  This headphone sounds good, looks good, closed, and has bass for your type of music.  Look it up on the forum and you will see that they are really good for the money.
