Well in the cases of those leads, the red one usually means "Hot" (positive voltage). At least with them little battery boxes that I've tested with a DMM/VTMT.

Bottom line, many headphone manufacturers use the red to signify the right side (my Westones have a red dot on the shell).

Well, you learn something new every day! It says "R" in tiny letters my HD25 1:II on the red cable connector on the right earcup. So that is the first time I have seen single cable headphones with the cable going in on the right side. In my experience, it is ALWAYS on the left side...
 
Anyway, back to the topic. Saw two people with Koss PortaPro this morning and a poor guy with some sort of WESC headphones...
