which campus is that ? I saw a lot of hd 25 around Melbourne central but the best I have seen so far is a guy with signature pro at rmit it was 1 minute before the lecture so I couldn't have a look at his rig

I saw an HD800 today on campus.

Let me repeat that. On campus. A guy was walking around wearing it. I was seriously tempted to take a photo of him for teh lulz.

man must REALLY love his music...i wonder how big his portable rig was.

I couldn't really see it, but whatever his source was it was small enough to keep inside his backpack. I don't even know what kind of portable amp can actually drive the HD800.

University of Melbourne.

HD800 on campus sounds crazy haha

It's seriously not the type of headphones I ever expected to see out on in the open. For one I've never encountered a portable system that can even properly drive it...

I was sitting in a fairly empty and quiet hall at Kent State University today reading a book when a girl came and sat in one of the chairs near mine. She had Beats Solo's, which isn't exactly a rare sighting as probably anybody in college can attest to, but they were so loud I couldn't focus on my book anymore. I don't know if Beats even makes open headphones, or if she just had them turned up to a ridiculous level but I feel bad for her ears if she did. I just stared at her for a second, closed my book, and put my M50's on to drown her out.

They actually don't take that much juice. It's more a problem that they are open - although I happily use open cans when out in quiet parks and pedestrian areas and such. I've seen transportable battery powered set ups designed to run some of the big orthos (LCD2/HE5) - Those are impressive...big multi-box configurations.

HD555 is understandable, but HD650 is overkill. They have got to be amped and portable amps don't do the job very well.

The HD6xx are not that hard to drive, in fact slightly easier than the K70x/Q70x and 250 Ohm DTxx0. The E11 is good enough for portable use.

Meaning, they can be driven by portable amps running on 9v batteries?
My Porta Corda III drives the 600 ohm Beyerdynamics fine. Volumes tend to be at 2-3 o'clock at low gain.

The HD6xx need only half as much voltage (or even slightly less) as the 600 Ohm DT880 and DT990, due to the combination of higher sensitivity and lower impedance.
