HeadAmp Pico Portable Amp (w/ optional upsampling 24/96 USB DAC) Pre-Order Thread

Can the Pico function as a DAC alone? As in can you bypass the headphone amp inside and plug it into a home headphone amp?

Can the Pico sufficiently drive an HD650 and K701? Not drive as in simply cause them to make sound but actually cause them to make good sound. I've heard numerous times that a Hornet will drive a K701 and I for sure can say that my Hornet definitely does NOT drive a K701 on any gain setting.

- You can't bypass the headphone amp, you can only use the output as a volume controlled "variable output" which is very transparent when connected to another amplifier

- I have both HD650 and K701, and K701 is harder to drive. It was what I used as a difficult headphone test with the Pico and caused me to make many changes to the prototypes. It will do just fine with the K701

E.g. if clear specified on preorder, will the knob be clear too?
And is red the only LED option?

Thanks

Yes, knob color will be same color as the body unless you mention a different color for the knob.

Red LEDs are the only ones

Listening to some Christmas Tunes through my Pico now. Thanks so much for making my Christmas even better this year, Justin.

The silver on black looks great, Ed! If not for loving the bronze finish ever since I first saw it on an AE-2 (aside from how it mimics the L3000's color), that would have to be my color pick!

From you legions of (soon to be) satisfied customers, I hope you have had at least some rest today, Justin, because once the Pico takes over the world, there'll be no rest for the busy!

Justin, what gain and volume position would you recommend when connecting to external amp? I assume gain should be at low, should the volume be maxed?

Not sure which gain setting is appropriate, but I'd venture a guess you wouldn't want to max out the volume. From what I can gather around 1-2V is the standard line out level and you may even get away with as high as 5V. I think it'll boil down to how hot of a source your external amp can handle before it overloads.

Just my 2 cents and my 5th post hardly qualifies me as an expert

LOL, and the custom embossed leather pouch matches the leather ear pads.
