So even if the pictures show copper colored rings around it or any small differences like that, in essence they can still be the same driver.

Nope, the hd650 should be a different driver. It sounds different.

you are right about the cable it probably is placebo but maybe you have something

Apologies for bumping this already old thread, but my old HD650s had a driver marked 'HD580' once the driver was 'exposed'. This would lead me to believe that the 580 and the 650 also share the same driver.

Looking forward to my HD600s, kinda regret selling my HD650s now and keeping my K701s. The K701s just don't 'do it for me' with my current setup, and I miss my HD650

I own both and both of them have the Equinox and I must say that the 600s are my cup of tea. I just think they are more resolving with a presentation that suits me...the HD650s are great but they aren't special to me...too congested with the bass overpowering. I don't like sugar or cream in my coffee you know, I like the coffee and I only want to taste the coffee if you get my meaning. But, having said that I have to add that I've tried the 650s on the heed audio can amp and....ugh....it was so muddy and just awfully overbassed, then I tried them on the DAC1s amp, wow what a change...so what I am trying to say that maybe the 650s just need the proper synergy...I am waiting on a GS-1 headamp and am thinking that I may be in for an eyeopener--I'm still learning and am on a journey--I can't help wondering what the GS-1 will do for these 650s as well as my RS-1s and GS1000s.

HD600 for me.

I'm guessing that the HD650 is probably potentially better, but as I've found out, the HD600 can sound wonderful on more modest setups like mine, whereas the 650 can sound boring and muffled on a more modest system. I get the feeling the 650 really needs a monster of a system to truly shine.

If you do a search you will find that although the small "membrane" material is marked "HD580" it is the only common "part" of the element in the 580/600 and the HD650s. The HD650 have different drivers than the 580/600s.... period.

HD-650 sounds better on my setup

It's a tough call between the two. I've been switching back and forth between the two a lot lately, but can't quite come to a decision. I've got the HD-600 on the Si2A3 with some Dr. Dog... it sounds magical on the DHTs. But last night, I had some Depeche Mode on the Zana with the HD-650. Also magical. So I'm not going to choose, I'm just going to enjoy the hell out of this.

The hd650 was a bit more pleasant with my music so that's the one I have kept.

I just got a pair of HD650s to complement the HD600 and I vote HD650. I feel like the HD650 fills the lack of bass impact that I experienced with the HD600 and smooths out the sometimes grainy nature of the HD600s. Of course you are giving up a little bit of neutrality and tone but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages in my case.
