Got my Sony MDR-V7

I have used my MDR-V7's for decades working in various studios and only changed the pads for the second time lately. The headband is getting on though.

Interesting thread. I'm glad I kept my V7s after all. I replaced the ear-pads a few years ago and dusted them off again today out of curiosity...they're pretty good!
I think I also have the original cardboard back to their box at home somewhere.
I did have a little bit of buzzing at bass frequencies in both ears to some extent but after some investigation found it to be tiny bits of the foam ring that surrounds the driver, sitting on the driver itself, where the foam has started to disintegrate a little bit. Blew it out and hey presto, all nice and smooth.
I have NAD HP50s at home and use Westone W3s on the train. Certainly compared to the W3s they have a slight 'V'-shape which reveals a fair bit of extra information due to the increased treble, but I also find their soundstage is pretty good too. Nice and stable and definitely wider than my in-ears.
I'll A-B them with the NADs tonight and then tomorrow I'm going to have a listen to Shure 1540s and the Oppo PM-3s...just to make sure I'm not missing out on anything wonderful

Anyway, great to have a spare pair of 'phones at work that sound rather good, considering their age :)

A question for other owners out there. The only pads I have are replacements I bought years ago, and the do not have a foam back, more of a very fine cloth and you can see the drivers through them.
Is that correct or should they be thin foam between your ear and the driver?

That's what I thought, thanks. I'll get some new pads in that case.
