Everyone at high school. :). Every teenager there seems to praise the Beats / Bose / Skullcandy. The best I've ever seen during school that people wore were Sonys.

Ahh, the high schoolers. Wearing their Beats as if they were status symbols instead of regarding them as some of the worst price/performance headphones on the market. If someone said my IEM's/cans were on par with the Beats, Bose, or *sigh* Skullcandy's, I would have to beat some heads in

Looks are important. Branding and fashion is important and head-fi'ers are in a way branding themselves by lugging around huge cans and portable amps. It is a way to stant out and be a part of an exclusive club.

Maybe a few head-fiers do this, thinking it's cool to be different and tech-y.  But in order to be branding yourself you have to be doing it for looks, not for substantive reasons.  And I think a lot of head-fiers use the equipment they use for how it sounds.  I certainly do.

But I definitely enjoy wearing headphones that are not Beats and which I bought for sound purposes, because I like feeling like I'm not branding myself.  Which in itself is branding...

Are they really overpriced? Most people who don't do a lot of research will pay near RRP for many things, which puts things into perspective. If we assume people will pay near rrp for things that they are not extremely interested in, $650 for a HD650, $500 for a K701, $350 for a DT880 (hey this isn't that bad). $300-400 for the beats isn't too far off. The shure 840s are $250 rrp while the m50 is $200.

I've never been called out for not having beats, but a lot of my friends frown upon me spending $100+ on headphones, people that make music and care about it. They don't care about the quality though. I have one friend who's mildly interested, but he's been teetering for a while now. I'd bring my Ad900 for my friends to try, but I don't want to risk them breaking. My girlfriend loves them though and understands why they cost so much, in-fact she bought them for me.

My dad made the What face and my bro just gave me that funny look when bought my AD700 when they was 117 off ebay. Then even more so when I went to a HFI-780 I didnt wanna try to explain to him the reasons. But now I didnt even bother or told him about my AKGs.

Have you listened to the Beats though? For that much money they are pretty bad.

I find it fishy that on Monster's site they don't list the frequency range in the specs. Nor do they offer a frequency response graph. Apparently, the Dre Beats have high impact one-note bass that fails to reach much further than 100Hz. Meanwhile, my Pro 900s which I got for $435 (not much more than the beats) are vastly superior. Not only do I think the Beats are overpriced - they aren't well designed by any means.

In that case, I hereby twart (bad spelled? Idc) Monster's plans or world domination by publishing the frequency response for their crappy Beats. Mwahahaha!

Now, the blue boombox-in-your-ears-with-dried-up-tied-dead-highs is the Solo model. The red omgwtf-lower-bass-is-a-myth are the Studios. Pretty sad, isn't it?

The blue line is the Tours.  There isn't a full size dynamic on the planet that has that kind of bass response.
