Can't blame them. Those really great headphones from $150 to $300 has nothing special on their packaging/advertisements (if any at all) that claims to be anything special, If I had 0 head-fi knowledge, I would go for the beats any day, especially because Shure, Mid end Senns, and others on display are extremely rare. Plus the clarity is lost from the guy next to you blast-testing the beatbox in the noisy Best Buy, which is usually the largest electronic store in anyone's general area.

It sucks that you can't get real comparisons from a variety of headphones before you make a purchase. Technically, I could just order a bunch from Amazon and return them all but my favorite, but that would be dirty.

Audio Technica M-50, V-Moda Crossfade Lp or Lp2?

On an unrelated note I was watching american idol and I saw beats in EVERY SINGLE SHOT when they were talking with the singers about what song they should sing. I mean it when I say literally, camera faces two guys who help them pick, beats mixrs on the mixing thing or whatever it was and hanging off WILL.I.AM.'s seat. switch to the actual singer, beats hanging off a mic stand or something.

Consider the Shure SRH 840s, Everybody says they sound better than the M-50s. Knock out the V-Modas, I had them and you really can't compare them against these real prestigious brands.

Consider the SRH 840 if you have a skinnier head, otherwise they would hurt A LOT
M-50 if you're head is rounder, bigger, or just.. different...

Also take a look at the Beyerdynamic DT 770 pros too. They're said to be the best sounding hands down, but the looks make me puke.

SRH 840, ATH-M50, and DT 770 Pro was the 3 I narrowed down for my ~$150 headphone choice.. (I went with the Shures)

No regrets. Out of the box, they knock my old Crossfade LP out of the air

SRH is more neutral than the Crossfade but better is up to the listener.  I would not agree.

X2
The original question was for suggestions concerning bass centric cans. The SRH 840 and ATH-M50 would be very poor choices. The Crossfade LP2 and the M-80 are two completely different animals and the M-80 easily surpasses the LP for quality well controlled bass. I won't comment on the Beyer DT 770 because I've never heard them. Of coarse that's just my subjective opinion if someone thinks an M50 or a SRH840 is a good bass centric can to each their own.

I used to always use my Beats Tour but ever since I got my V-MODA V-80's I've been using those and most of my friends always ask "What happened to your Beats?" or "How come you didn't just buy Beats?" I usually just explain to them that they aren't very good headphones for the price you pay. Most of them think there's only four types of headphones/earphones your typical Apple ones, Skullcandy, Beats, and of course Bose. They then proceed to plug my headphones into their iPhones with their terribly low bitrate tracks and say "They sound okay."

Last week at school, got approached by one of my club juniors, claiming that he was an audiophile (like me). I said "oh really?" and he took out a pair of Beats Studio, which he proudly proclaimed (and a direct quote too) was "completely real and not fake", as if having real Beats was the ****.

I just poker face'd, and sloooowly backed away.

I just moved to the UK, which meant leaving my big sound system at home for a pair of headphones, and I bought the Sennheiser HD 25-1 IIs after reading about them here. Three of my friends who also moved bought Beats Solo HDs.

When we met at the airport they asked me where I'd bought my headphones, why they looked so weird and why I didn't have Beats. When I told them why how much I'd spent they flipped out and said "But you could have had these instead!"

Then I let them listen to my Senns. Suddenly, I'm the headphone-guru in my class. Thanks Head-Fi!
Since they can't pick on my headphones because of the way they sound, they've started picking on the looks instead but I just let them. I find it kind of funny. Most of the Beats owners I've met have had this obsession of proving that their headphones are better than everything else out there in one way or another.. Has anyone else noticed this?

Recently, I actually recommended the Beats Solo HD to a friend. He said he wanted a pair of headphones for listening mainly to Hip-hop and he wanted them to look good. He loves them and says he can't thank me enough!
I guess sometimes the Beats are better. I don't think he'd be as happy with a pair of HD 25-1 IIs.

You can beautify your HD25 here if you like.

I tried giving him some basic pointers like they're just a damn marketing scheme and told him you can get way better cans at half the price that sound a gajillion times better but then I stopped, figuring there was no point...lol then I blamed myself for having a friend like that

Beats is definitely playing on the marketing heavily and the general lack of comparison shopping at the store level; Beats vs Bose seriously
?
It's hard to convince
someone
 to spend 100s of
dollars
on a product they just cant try out and that's where ther marking plays in.  Uneducated consumers who already listen to particular type of music will naturally assume their favorite musician/performer is a credible source of
knowledge and thus follows his/her recommendation; Beats are born.

Honestly
its hard to 'sell' headphones on paper/ads to someone with zero point of reference.  But once you have them listen to their own ears with their own music, you'll see that magical moment when
the
light turns on.  As a personal crusade, I took it upon myself to expose my friends/family to the light that is high-fi headphones and have since successfully graduated a dozen or so people to better headphones at lower expense (until they start fiddling with amps and like) and as long as my immediate circle is purged of the Bose et al, i can die happy. =)
